layering skincare properly 🧼

2025/2/19 Edited to

... Read moreHey skincare lovers! I used to think layering was just about slapping products on, but oh boy, was I wrong! Getting your skincare layering right is a game-changer for getting the most out of every single product. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve found a routine that truly works, and I want to share how you can master the art of applying your skincare products correctly. First off, the golden rule I always follow: thinnest to thickest. This ensures each product can properly penetrate your skin and do its job without being blocked by heavier formulas. Imagine trying to paint a wall with a thick primer before a thin coat – it just doesn't work as well! Let's break down the ideal order, which is what I personally follow for my glowing skin: CLEANSER: Always start with a clean slate! This step is crucial for removing dirt, oil, and makeup, prepping your skin to absorb all the goodness to come. For me, a gentle cleanse is key, especially in the morning. EXFOLIATE (1-3 times a week): If you're using a chemical or physical exfoliant, this is the time. It sloughs off dead skin cells, making your skin smoother and allowing subsequent products to sink in better. I usually do this in the evening, after cleansing. Toners & Essences: These are usually watery and help balance your skin's pH and add a first layer of hydration. I just pat these in with my hands, letting them absorb for a moment. SERUMS: Ah, serums – the powerhouses of our routine! This is where many of you, like me, might wonder how to layer serums. Here's my personal tip: Water-based first: If you have multiple serums, always start with the most lightweight, water-based ones (like a Hyaluronic Acid serum). I find these absorb quickly. Targeted treatment: Next, apply your treatment serums (like Vitamin C for brightness or Niacinamide for pores). I usually give each serum a minute or two to absorb before moving on. This patience really pays off! Oil-based last: If you use an oil-based serum, it generally goes after water-based ones but before your moisturizer, as oils are more occlusive. EYE CREAM: Your delicate under-eye area needs special attention. I gently dab my eye cream around my orbital bone with my ring finger before my main moisturizer. It's a small step that makes a big difference! MOISTURIZER: This is your final step to seal everything in and provide hydration throughout the day or night. For layering moisturizers, I usually stick to one good one that suits my skin type. However, if you have very dry skin, you might layer a lighter hydrating lotion under a thicker cream, or use a specific night cream that's richer than your day moisturizer. Just make sure the first one absorbs before the second. SPF (Daytime Only): Please, never skip this! Sunscreen is non-negotiable and always the LAST step in your morning routine to protect all the hard work you've put into your skin. It shields you from harmful UV rays and prevents premature aging. My biggest takeaway from learning to layer properly? Patience! Don't rush between steps. Giving products a moment to absorb makes a huge difference in their efficacy. Also, remember that listening to your skin is crucial. If something feels heavy or causes pilling, adjust your routine. This isn't just about applying products; it's about creating a ritual that nourishes your skin and helps you achieve that healthy, glowing complexion!
