Quokkas

... Read moreIf you're planning a trip to Rottnest Island, getting a selfie with a smiling quokka is probably high on your list – and it absolutely should be! From my recent visit, I can tell you it's one of the most heartwarming experiences you'll have. These little marsupials are truly adorable, and with a few tips, you can capture that iconic shot just like I did, even getting a lovely one where a quokka was holding a green leaf right in front of the camera! First things first, remember that quokkas are wild animals, and their welfare is paramount. Always observe them from a respectful distance and never, ever feed them human food. The best way to get that 'smiling' shot isn't by forcing it, but by being patient and letting them approach you if they feel comfortable. I found that sitting or lying down on the ground, as depicted in many of my photos where you see a smiling woman taking a selfie, helps a lot. It puts you at their eye level and makes you seem less imposing. When I was trying to get my perfect quokka selfie, I spent a good amount of time just observing them. They're naturally curious creatures. If you stay still and quiet, they might just wander up to investigate. That's when you can slowly position your phone for a selfie. I noticed that they often look like they're smiling – it’s just the natural shape of their mouth, but it’s incredibly charming! Sometimes, they'd even nibble on a nearby green leaf, creating an even more picturesque moment for the camera. Where are the best spots for quokka sightings on Rottnest Island? I found them almost everywhere, but around the main settlement, Thomson Bay, and further inland near the bike trails, they seemed particularly abundant and a bit more accustomed to human presence (though still wild!). Early mornings or late afternoons are often the best times, as it's cooler and they are more active. During midday heat, they tend to nap in the shade. To get a clear smiling quokka portrait, make sure your phone's camera is clean and you have good lighting. Avoid using flash, as it can startle them. I usually just used my front-facing camera, aligning it so both the quokka and I were in the frame. Patience is your biggest ally here. Don't rush the moment, just enjoy being in their presence. I saw many tourists, like the smiling women in sunglasses you see in my pictures, successfully capture their own memorable quokka selfies by following these simple guidelines. It’s all about being respectful and ready for that magical moment when they give you that characteristic quokka smile! Finally, while it's tempting to want to touch them, remember the "look, but don't touch" rule. Not only is it for their safety, but it's also a legal requirement on the island. My focus was always on getting a great selfie with a quokka, and I truly believe the best photos come from genuine, respectful interaction. You'll leave with incredible memories and photos, like my smiling quokka selfie, that perfectly capture the unique charm of Rottnest Island.
