Whomp whomp ah book review

Hey book lovers! So, I recently finished The Neighbor Favor by Kristina Forest, and… whew. Let’s just say, this was not the cozy, feel-good slow-burn I was hoping for. 😬

I went into this book so ready to fall in love. A romance with email pen pals, awkward charm, and a promise of that sweet slow-burn tension? YES, PLEASE. Or at least, that’s what I thought.

But let’s be real—it didn’t deliver.

🔍 What Didn’t Work for Me:

💤 The Pacing Was Slooooow

It was marketed as a slow burn, but instead of that satisfying tension-building, it felt like walking through molasses. I kept waiting for something to happen—anything—but every time the plot seemed ready to take off, it just… didn’t.

😕 The Awkward Girl Energy Didn’t Hit

I love a relatable, quirky main character, but Lily didn’t feel authentic. Her awkwardness didn’t land as charming—it felt forced and flat. I couldn’t connect with her at all, and that made it hard to root for the romance.

⏳ Why Didn’t I DNF?

Honestly? I should’ve. But I kept pushing through because I wanted to believe it would get better. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. I finished the book feeling let down, wishing I had trusted my instincts and saved my time.

💬 Is It Just Me?

I get it—this book has its fans, and I can see why some readers might enjoy the soft, gentle romance vibe. But if you’re like me and crave emotional depth, tension that builds, and characters who feel real? This one might not be for you.

⚖️ Final Thoughts:

Would I recommend The Neighbor Favor? Honestly… no. Unless you’re into extremely slow-paced, gentle romances with minimal tension.

For my fellow slow-burn lovers who need that real spark, this book might leave you feeling bored and disconnected.

📚 Lesson learned: It’s okay to DNF a book that’s not working for you. I just wish I had listened to that little voice telling me to stop.

💡 Have you read this book? Did it work for you, or did you feel the same way I did? Let’s chat in the comments!

2025/2/20 Edited to

... Read moreIn The Neighbor Favor, readers are introduced to a romance that starts off with promise but ultimately fails to deliver on its potential. The story revolves around the concept of email pen pals, which could typically lend itself to a rich and engaging narrative filled with emotional depth and chemistry. However, as articulated in the review, the pacing of the book felt torturously slow, making it a struggle for readers to remain invested in the unfolding romance. Authenticity in characters is another crucial element that can make or break a story. In this case, the main character Lily was described as being portrayed with awkwardness that did not come across as relatable or charming, but rather forced. This lack of connection to the protagonist could lead readers to feel less inclined to cheer for her romantic endeavors, creating a barrier between the reader and the narrative's supposed emotional stakes. For avid romance readers who cherish well-paced storytelling with nuanced characters, The Neighbor Favor may leave much to be desired. Readers who thrive on captivating tension and gradual, believable romance may find themselves disappointed by the overall execution of this story. The discussion around DNFing (Did Not Finish) a book resonates with many readers who recognize the importance of navigating through literature that truly engages and resonates with them. If you find that a book fails to spark joy or intrigue, it's entirely valid to set it aside.
