What I think of during my performances
*a deep dive into my crazy brain*
1. “What do I look like? Do I look OK?“ I’m thinking of that person in the audience that is taking a photo or even a video of my performance. There’s nothing wrong with having “singers face“ but I try my best not to have it. 😂
2. “Okay….big note coming, take a deep breath!” I love performing super dramatic songs, and that usually means that there is a crazy high note or a crazy long note that I have to hold out for a long time. That being said, I’m constantly thinking of breathing from my diaphragm, and not from my shoulders.
3. “What emotion am I feeling, how does this relate to me?” no matter what character I’m playing or what song, I always think about drawing it back to myself. I could just sing a song, or I could sing it with emotion and tell a story. I’m always making sure and thinking if I’m making whatever song I’m performing into karaoke night or a performance!
4. “I’m scared I’m scared I’m scared!………okay let’s just go for it!” After performing so many sets, and you’re close to the end of the cruise week, you’re vocally tired! But at the end of the day, this is your job! Go for that big note and if you crack, you crack. And if you don’t, then you slayed another day.
5. “oh my goodness! Look at my Bestie go, she is killing it“ I love finding the little moments in each performance to look at my fellow coworkers, and just admire their work! Everyone I’ve worked with is so talented in their own special way, and bring something special to the stage each time. And sometimes we even play games on stage, and the audience has no idea.
6. “Wow, I really love my job.” I am constantly having a blast to say the least because my passion/hobby is my career! I am so lucky and thankful to have this experience be everything I wanted it to be and more! And to have a job that I absolutely adore. I’m having fun constantly, because this is exactly what I am meant to do.

Performing live is an exhilarating yet daunting task that many artists face. During a performance, the thoughts that race through my mind can range from technical aspects to emotional connections with the audience. Managing on-stage presence is crucial; I often ponder my appearance and wonder how I'm being perceived as I perform. Maintaining breath support is vital for delivering those challenging notes, and I remind myself to breathe deeply and from my diaphragm. Another important aspect is the emotional depth of the songs I perform. Instead of merely singing, I strive to convey genuine emotion and tell a story that resonates with my audience. As fatigue sets in during longer performance weeks, especially on cruise ships, the pressure can amplify feelings of fear and excitement. Yet, each performance also brings moments of joy, like admiring the talent of my fellow performers. This camaraderie enhances the overall experience, as some of the best memories are made behind the scenes or during shared laughs on stage. I feel incredibly fortunate to transform my passion into a career, constantly fueled by the joy it brings to both me and my audience. Ultimately, these performances remind me how meaningful it is to engage with others through art.
