cheap traditional chinese desserts near bugis 🍧

my friends and i checked out the new outlet of Yat Ka Yan Dessert (Tan Quee Lan) last night and here’s what we ate!

🌟grass jelly w taro and sweet potato ball

our one cold dessert for the night! honestly was pretty similar to jiuxian style, but the taro and sweet potato balls were quite QQ and i did enjoy that! i think their hot desserts stole the show though

🌟sesame paste w tangyuan

wasn’t too bad! you do get a choice of sesame vs peanut tangyuan when you order and i got sesame which was pretty good! the paste wasn’t too sweet which was great!

🌟purple rice w ice cream

this was truly the STAR OF THE SHOW it was SO GOOD!!!! you have to give this a try if you ever visit yat ka yan my friends and i were really speechless when we ate it…

each of the desserts was around $6 so our total damage was ~$18 for 3 people! i definitely enjoyed the purple rice the most - it was SO GOOD and i will 100% be back for it! the queue got pretty long right after we sat down so that’s definitely something to take note of, the place is pretty popular even on weekday nights so you might want to go a little earlier.

Yat Ka Yan Dessert (Tan Quee Lan)
2024/4/3 Edited to

... Read moreIf you're exploring desserts near Bugis and crave authentic traditional Chinese sweets, Yat Ka Yan is definitely a hotspot to consider. Besides the purple rice with ice cream that stole the show, the sesame paste with tangyuan offers a delightful balance—not too sweet and very comforting, especially if you prefer handmade desserts that remind you of home. The grass jelly paired with taro and sweet potato balls also gives a nice chewy texture known as QQ, a popular delight in Chinese desserts. I’ve noticed that many dessert lovers around Bugis appreciate places like Yat Ka Yan for keeping prices affordable, with most dishes around $6, making it easy to share a variety with friends without breaking the bank. Since it can get quite busy even on weekday nights, an early visit might be the key to enjoying a relaxed experience. If you’re on the lookout for something different beyond the usual dessert spots like Teamoo or Jiu Xian, this place is a hidden gem for those who enjoy traditional flavors with a modern twist. Don’t miss the chance to try their sesame or peanut tangyuan, which adds to the authentic experience alongside other classic options. Overall, it’s a great spot to satisfy your sweet cravings while exploring the delicious local dessert culture in Singapore.
