cancer is gone but the effects linger

I’m coming up on three years thyroid cancer free, and one thing I didn’t expect was how much daily life would revolve around something I no longer have (my thyroid).

Before cancer, I never gave that tiny gland a second thought. I don’t think I would’ve even known what it was. Now I understand just how much it controls… like your energy, mood, weight, temperature, metabolism, hormones, and SO much more.

If you’re someone who worries about thyroid issues, the best thing you can do is pay attention early. Unexplained fatigue, hair thinning, anxiety, weight changes, brain fog, feeling cold all the time… these are easy to brush off as “normal life,” but they’re often early signals that something is off. I spent a long time dismissing my symptoms and it even took me months and months AFTER diagnosis to recognize symptoms for what they were.

Advocate for full thyroid panels, not just basic labs. Listen to your body before it has to scream for your attention. And if you’re someone living with an underactive thyroid (or without one at all like me) life is still very full, but it requires intention.

Medication timing MATTERS. Routine labs MATTER. Sleep, stress, and nutrition MATTER more than they used to. I’ve learned that I don’t have the luxury of ignoring my body anymore. And in a strange way, that’s made me more in tune with myself than I’ve ever been.

... Read moreLiving without a thyroid after cancer treatment can be a journey of continuous learning and adjustment. Even though the cancer is gone, the body's response to its absence often lingers and requires ongoing management. From personal experience, I found that the transition to life without a thyroid involves more than just taking medication. It means understanding how this tiny gland influences vital body functions like energy levels, mood stability, metabolism, and temperature regulation. One important lesson I've learned is the significance of timing medication carefully. Consistency is key because thyroid hormone replacement medications can have varying absorption rates depending on factors like food intake and other medications. For instance, taking thyroid medication on an empty stomach and waiting before eating can improve its effectiveness, reducing symptoms like fatigue or brain fog. Routine lab tests are crucial for monitoring thyroid hormone levels to ensure they remain within the optimal range. Basic thyroid panels might not be enough; advocating for comprehensive tests can help catch imbalances early before they manifest as more severe symptoms. Keeping a symptom diary before lab visits can also enable better discussions with healthcare providers. Mental health is another side often affected by thyroid issues after cancer. The OCR content from the article's images highlights the intense health anxiety survivors face—every headache or discomfort can feel catastrophic after experiencing cancer. I found that mindfulness practices and community support helped me manage this constant vigilance and reduce fear-driven over-checking of symptoms. Nutrition also plays a larger role than I anticipated. Focusing on a balanced diet with adequate selenium, zinc, and iodine—key nutrients supporting thyroid function—even in the absence of the gland has been beneficial. Stability in blood sugar and avoiding inflammatory foods can reduce symptoms like fatigue and mood swings. Lastly, patience and intentional living make a difference. Life without a thyroid isn’t a limitation but invites deeper body awareness and self-care. By embracing lifestyle changes around medication, nutrition, and mental health, life remains full and meaningful beyond cancer recovery.

Listen friend. Hold onto the tiny awesome moments. I had stage 3 breast. Then clear for a year. Then metastatic. Listen though, that was 11 years ago it matters if you progress, but SO MUCH LESS THAN BEFORE!!!! I’m sure you’ll never have it, I just want you to know, the worst news isn’t the worst news anymore. You’ve got this regardless. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
