building worth in reflection
I have always been the skinny girl… the tall, string bean kid still wearing 3T and 4T when everyone else had moved on. It was a joke growing up and if I’m honest, I wore that joke like a crown. I didn’t always think I was pretty, but I always knew I was skinny, and I quietly built my self worth around that.
Now I’m 27, almost 28, and for the first time in my life, I’m watching my body change in a way that isn’t about growing up… it’s about aging. Fine lines. Gray hairs. Stretch marks. Weight that settles in places it never used to. When you’ve spent your whole life seeing a tiny, petite girl in the mirror, even small changes feel enormous. It’s been confronting, humbling, and honestly… emotional.
The other day at preschool drop off, the teacher told the kids, “You may be done growing one day, but you’re never done aging.” The kids talked about pets and grandparents. And I stood there realizing I’m in a strange middle place… not growing into my 20s anymore, but not ready to feel like I’m aging either. This is the first time I’ve had to separate my worth from my reflection. And I know I’m not the only one quietly struggling with that.
