Shakshuka Recipe | Savory Breakfast Idea

I had leftover red pasta sauce and didn’t want pasta. Here’s what I made. It’s not authentic but it’s still good!

Ingredients:

• Red sauce or can of tomatoes

• Red pepper

• Onion

• Eggs

• Cumin, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder of any kind

• Bread for serving

• (Optional) Literally any kind of peppers

Directions:

1. In a pan, fry chopped bell peppers, onion, and (optionally) other peppers.

2. Once they start to char, pour in a can of tomatoes or red sauce. Let it simmer. Add water as necessary to prevent it from getting too thick.

3. As it thickens, mix in your spices.

4. Create a pocket in the sauce after it has slightly thickened. Crack an egg into this pocket. Cover the egg whites in the sauce. I suggest covering the pan with a lid for an even cook. Cook until the eggs are to your liking.

5. Serve with bread. Enjoy!

Additional notes: if you’re using a can of red sauce, fill up the empty can with a bit of water to get ALL of the sauce out. For my recipe, I added in chopped jalapeños and chipotle chili powder to make it spicier.

... Read moreOkay, let me tell you, this 'Lazy Girl Shakshuka Recipe' has been an absolute game-changer in my kitchen! I'm all about quick, satisfying meals, especially for breakfast or a light dinner, and this one-pan wonder truly delivers. When I first discovered how easy it was to transform simple ingredients into such a flavorful dish, I was hooked. It’s perfect for those mornings when you want something comforting and hearty but don't have a lot of time or energy. One thing I absolutely adore about this recipe is its incredible flexibility. Don't have homemade red sauce? No problem! I often use a good quality store-bought marinara or even just canned crushed tomatoes seasoned with extra spices like more cumin, paprika, and a pinch of sugar to balance the acidity. This really makes it a 'use what you have' kind of meal. I've experimented with adding different vegetables too – sometimes I toss in some chopped zucchini or even a handful of fresh spinach right before the eggs go in, making it an even healthier and more colorful dish. For those of you wondering about variations, especially those curious about 'shrimp shakshuka' or 'seafood shakshuka' – yes, you absolutely can! I've tried adding pre-cooked shrimp directly into the simmering sauce a few minutes before cracking the eggs, just long enough for them to warm through. It adds a lovely texture and a different flavor profile that's surprisingly delicious. If you're feeling adventurous, some crumbled feta cheese on top right after it's done cooking is also a fantastic addition, adding a tangy, salty kick. Getting the 'perfect consistency' for your shakshuka sauce is easier than you think. My tip is to let it simmer gently until it's thick enough to hold the eggs, but not so thick it's like a paste. If it gets too thick, a splash of water or vegetable broth will loosen it right up. As for the eggs, I usually aim for runny yolks, which means covering the pan with a lid is key to steam the whites beautifully while keeping the yolks custardy. You can always peek and gently wiggle the pan to check how set the whites are – I've cooked batches with 'six eggs' before, and the lid method ensures they all cook evenly. This isn't just a 'quick shakshuka for one' recipe – it's easily scalable. If I'm cooking for myself, I'll use a smaller pan and just one or two eggs. But it’s equally simple to whip up a bigger batch for a brunch with friends. Beyond just bread, I love serving mine with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro or parsley, a dollop of Greek yogurt, or even some sliced avocado on the side. Sometimes, a dash of my favorite hot sauce takes it to the next level. It's truly a versatile dish that you can make your own every single time!
