Chicago Art Museum: Free on Tuesdays🖼️

The Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the largest museums dedicated to contemporary art 👩🏽‍🎨 The very first time I went, they had an entire exhibit dedicated to the late Virgil Abloh; a fashion pioneer who died way too soon. It’s not your typical art museum where things can become mundane and boring after a while; MCA tends to keep things relatable and in touch with today’s trends and that’s why it’s a must see! Chicago residents get in free every Tuesday from 5 pm - 9 pm/ the rest of the week it’s $19; for non chicago residents tix are $22 (special accommodations for students/teachers, veterans, etc) #lemon8partner #chicagomuseum

... Read moreOkay, fellow art lovers and Chicago adventurers, I have to spill the beans on one of my absolute favorite city secrets: the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago's Free Tuesdays! Seriously, if you're a Chicago resident, this is a golden ticket you don't want to miss. I remember the first time I heard about it – I thought, 'No way, free world-class art?' But it's true! Every Tuesday from 5 PM to 9 PM, you can immerse yourself in incredible contemporary art without spending a dime on admission. To make sure you snag that free entry, just remember to bring a valid ID proving your Chicago residency. Think driver's license, state ID, or even a utility bill with your address. It’s super straightforward, and the staff are always friendly. For those outside Chicago or visiting on other days, it's usually $19, and even $22 for non-Illinois residents on weekends, so those Tuesday evenings are a real steal! What makes MCA so special, you ask? It's genuinely unlike any other art museum I've been to. They consistently feature groundbreaking exhibits that challenge your perspective and keep things incredibly current. For example, on a recent visit, I was captivated by an installation where a person was depicted sitting on a couch in a blue-lit room, bathed in the soft glow of candles, with a large circular zodiac sign overhead. It created such an atmospheric and introspective space! Another time, I saw a vibrant neon art installation that spelled out powerful words like 'DEATH,' 'LOVE,' 'HATE,' 'PLEASURE,' 'PAIN,' and 'LIFE.' It just makes you stop and think. You'll also discover pieces that resonate with everyday life and culture, like a dynamic collage-like figure in a basketball pose, soaring above a stadium crowd – it's so energetic! And don't forget to explore the outdoor spaces; I've seen some striking abstract yellow and white striped sculptures that resemble human figures standing tall against the sky. They truly make art accessible and relatable, moving far beyond what you might expect from a traditional museum. They even have pieces that celebrate childhood and creativity, like a sweet photograph of a young child with dark skin holding colorful pencils, peeking from behind a shiny red bag. My top tip for Free Tuesdays? Go early, right at 5 PM, or later towards 8 PM to avoid the biggest crowds. It can get pretty popular, and for good reason! Also, give yourself plenty of time to wander. Don't rush through; take moments to absorb the meaning behind each piece. The museum is conveniently located, so consider taking public transport to avoid parking hassles. While you're there, grab a coffee or a snack from their café, or browse the gift shop for unique finds – sometimes, I just love looking at the art books and quirky gifts. Trust me, experiencing the MCA on a Free Tuesday is an absolute blast. It's an opportunity to connect with contemporary culture, feel inspired, and enjoy a vibrant part of Chicago without breaking the bank. Go explore, get inspired, and let me know what incredible art you discover!

A vibrant cityscape of Chicago under a clear blue sky, featuring skyscrapers and a busy street, with text overlay "PLACE TO VISIT IN CHICAGO THE ART INSTITUTE EDITION SWIPE."
