Singapore University Hack: Why Your Essay Is Just 'Descriptive'

🍋 Stuck at a 'B' or 'B-' grade despite pulling all-nighters at NLB? You're probably making the #1 mistake that kills grades for uni and poly students in Singapore: you are summarizing, not synthesizing.

Professors can spot a purely descriptive essay from a mile away. Descriptive writing just tells them what you read. Critical Synthesis shows them why it matters by connecting different sources to build a unique argument.

Swipe through our guide to see exactly how to stop describing and start distinction-hacking by mastering critical analysis.

Need expert mentorship to fine-tune your arguments for your next paper, dissertation, or MBA case study? At ACE Academic Services, we provide strictly 1-on-1, verified human guidance (0% AI) that empowers you with essential critical synthesis skills.

We’ve been helping students in Singapore refine their conceptual clarity and maximize their grades since 2012. We specialize in non-coding subjects like Business Strategy, humanities, and Nursing. 🎓

Stop guessing. Start excelling. Let's unblock your distinctions.

... Read moreWhen I first started university in Singapore, I struggled to move beyond simply describing what I had read in my essays. Despite spending hours at the NLB, my grades plateaued around a 'B' or 'B-'. It wasn’t until I grasped the difference between describing and synthesizing that my grades improved significantly. Critical synthesis involves connecting multiple sources to create a new, original argument rather than just summarizing them. A helpful strategy I learned was always to ask myself, "So what?" after presenting information. This question encourages deeper analysis by prompting me to explain why the information matters, how it supports or challenges my thesis, and its relevance to the course rubric. For example, instead of writing, "Source A says X and Source B says Y," I started weaving these viewpoints together to highlight contradictions or to support a novel interpretation. This demonstrated critical thinking, which professors highly value. Additionally, personalized mentorship was invaluable. Working one-on-one with a mentor from ACE Academic Services helped me refine my conceptual clarity. The mentor guided me through turning my descriptive notes into critical synthesis, enhancing both the quality and originality of my writing, especially for challenging subjects like Business Strategy. If you’re stuck at a 'B' grade despite hard work, try to shift your mindset from summarizing content to analyzing and synthesizing it. This approach requires patience and practice but is well worth the effort to unlock distinctions. Don’t hesitate to seek expert guidance if needed, as tailored feedback can accelerate your mastery of critical analysis and significantly boost your academic performance.
