If you're new to slow cooking pulled pork, this recipe is a fantastic way to start because it requires minimal prep but delivers maximum flavor. Using a 12oz can of Dr. Pepper adds a subtle sweetness and acidity that helps tenderize the pork while infusing it with a unique taste that sets it apart from traditional recipes. Letting the seasoning marinate for 30 minutes to an hour before cooking allows the flavors to penetrate deeply. Cooking the pork on low heat for about 8 hours is ideal to reach that perfect shreddable texture, but for those in a time crunch, high for 5 hours works well too. The internal temperature of 200°F ensures the meat is fully tender. When shredding, using two forks is a quick and easy method, but some prefer using meat claws for a more efficient process. Adding barbecue sauce at the end helps bind the pork and enhances the smoky, tangy profile. Kinders sauce or similar options work perfectly, but feel free to experiment with your favorite brands or homemade sauces to customize the dish. Serving pulled pork on buns is classic, but mixing it into creamy mac and cheese adds a delicious twist that's always a crowd-pleaser. Don't forget traditional sides like cornbread and coleslaw, which balance the richness and provide satisfying texture contrasts. For an even richer flavor, some like to add a little smoked paprika or cayenne to their seasoning mix. If you have leftover pulled pork, it freezes well and can be repurposed for tacos, salads, or even pizza toppings. This recipe strikes a great balance between ease and taste, making it accessible for beginners and a reliable staple for seasoned cooks alike.
