How to Apologize the Right Way

So many people confuse an apology with simply saying “sorry.”

But a real apology goes way deeper than that.

It’s not just about checking a box — it’s about owning up, holding space for the other person’s experience, and choosing to grow from it.

We ALL mess up sometimes. You’re not weak, dramatic, or “too emotional” for needing an apology — and you’re not weak for giving one either.

A proper apology looks like this:

✔ Acknowledge what you did

✔ Recognize how it affected the other person

✔ Explain why it happened without making excuses

✔ Commit to doing better

That’s it. No defensiveness. No guilt-tripping. No “I’m sorry you feel that way.”

Apologizing isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being accountable.

Be someone who can say:

“I hurt you, and I’m sorry. Here’s how I’ll do better.”

... Read moreApologizing correctly is a vital skill that fosters emotional maturity and strengthens relationships. A real apology involves more than simply saying 'I'm sorry'; it requires action and genuine reflection. Start with acknowledgment — clearly state what you did wrong and why it was harmful. For instance, if you made an insensitive comment, recognize that impact and specifically explain your thought process at the time, without excuses. The importance of understanding your impact cannot be overstated. Showing empathy to the person affected can pave the way for healing and growth. Offer context about your behavior to illustrate your understanding of their feelings. A meaningful apology also includes a commitment to change your behavior in the future. You might say, 'Next time, I'll take a moment to think before I comment.' Remember, apologizing when you've made a mistake is not a sign of weakness. It displays self-awareness and a willingness to be better. Embrace the opportunity to grow from your mistakes and strengthen your relationships by making your apologies count.

The part I’m struggling with is knowing how to move forward especially if they don’t respond in a way that’s both fulfilling in a positive sense. Some may still feel entitled to their feelings & holding space for grudges just to have something to hold over your head even after the apology and reassurance, but as long as the apology is coming from a genuine place with the intent of doing better, that’s all that really matters
