my journey to becoming a cycling instructor

Every fitness instructor’s journey is a bit different, but here’s my story! I currently teach cycling (and some boxing) at a locally-owned fitness studio. I am by no means the standard – every gym is different. However, I find a lot of joy in my job as an instructor and want to share my journey!

In 2018, I started attending group fitness classes as a way to prepare my body for an upcoming backpacking trip. Something clicked, and I kept coming back!

While I wasn’t a cycling fan at first, I attended other classes. Over time, I started cycling more and more – my body got used to the sensations, the studio purchased new bikes, and I found myself gravitating to the cycling studio more and more.

After the pandemic, I was itching to get back on a bike. I became a frequent rider during my time in graduate school as a way to disconnect from work (and my thesis!).

After the pandemic (and my graduate program), I moved to a nearby city. I explored a few studios and found one that aligned with what I was looking for. I kept going back – at this point, I was cycling 4-5 times a week and falling even more in love with indoor cycling.

In January 2022, I was asked to start teaching on a trial basis and got lots of feedback from other instructors. I was nowhere near the instructor I wanted to be at first, but I didn’t get discouraged and gave myself grace!

My gym was later purchased by my (now) studio – the same gym I had attended in college and graduate school was starting a new branch! I took the instructor certification weekend through this studio (*not a licensed cycling certification) and was hired.

From that point on, I started having more fun. I increased my focus on programming, added more fun choreo, explored more music, and kept learning and growing!

Our studio got an upgrade in summer 2023, and the fun continues! My confidence and programming get better each day.
