Moving AGAIN

It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new beginning, whether it's moving across state lines or building what you think is your 'dream home.' My recent experience of moving from Southern California to Texas, only to return to LA just six months later, taught me so much more than just the emotional lessons I shared. For anyone contemplating a big move – especially returning to a place you once left, or weighing the pros and cons of a city like Los Angeles – here are some practical considerations I wish I had focused on more upfront. Firstly, the financial aspect of moving, particularly back to a high-cost-of-living area like Los Angeles, cannot be overstated. While Texas offered a more affordable "dream home," the true cost of living extends beyond just mortgage payments. Factor in things like property taxes, insurance, gas prices, and even the daily cost of groceries and entertainment. We initially thought California was "too expensive," but sometimes the value you get from your environment, your community, and your overall well-being outweighs a lower monthly payment elsewhere. My advice? Do a comprehensive budget comparison, not just on housing, but on your entire lifestyle. Secondly, reconsider the reality of remote work if it's a key factor in your move. I genuinely believed working remotely would be a dream, allowing us more flexibility. However, I quickly realized how much I thrive on in-person collaboration, the energy of a creative team, and the inspiration of shooting in diverse locations that LA offers. If your job flexibility is driving your move, deeply assess what you need from your work environment. Are you truly productive and happy working alone, or do you need that daily interaction? It's a huge component of daily life, and for me, it was a piece of happiness I unknowingly left behind. Thirdly, don't underestimate the power of your social support system and desired lifestyle. I called myself a 'beach gal' for a reason – the ocean, the outdoor activities, the vibrant culture of SoCal truly fills my cup. While I loved the idea of a fresh start, I missed my established friends, my favorite spots, and the overall pace of life in Los Angeles. If you're moving from LA, think about what you'll truly miss. If you're moving to LA, consider how you'll build your community and embrace the unique lifestyle. It's more than just a city; it's a way of life, and it needs to align with who you are. Finally, the logistical and emotional toll of moving, especially rapidly or multiple times, is significant. Selling a home you just built, packing and unpacking twice in under a year, and navigating new schools or routines for family can be exhausting. I realized that sometimes, pushing through discomfort to find what truly makes you happy is worth the temporary chaos. Don't be afraid to admit a mistake and change course, even if it feels "crazy" to others. Your happiness and your family's well-being are paramount. Reflect on your own situation, and remember that sometimes the most courageous move is the one that brings you back home.
