I went to taiwan back in Mid April and jiufen&shifen was definitely the highlight of our trip!
Went to the tourist-y places and it was worth it! However, i would like to highlight the teahouses there! You can catch a glimpse of the town from up the mountain while enjoying their famous aromatic teas! We chose a quiet tea house near the edge of the mountain and chose peppermint tea to end the day on a perfect note and managed to catch the sunset! 😍 Please visit JF&SF if you ever travel to taiwan, it’s worth it!
Aside from the famous Jiufen Old Street and Shifen Old Street known for their vibrant night markets and street food, there are many hidden gems worth exploring for a more authentic experience. When visiting Jiufen, take time to explore the quaint tea houses that sit perched on the hillside. One particularly wonderful aspect I found was how these tea houses offer panoramic views of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean beyond. Opt for a quieter spot near the edge of the mountain where you can enjoy aromatic teas like peppermint while soaking in spectacular sunsets. It’s a peaceful way to escape the crowds and truly embrace the tranquil vibe of Jiufen. For Shifen, besides wandering the old street and trying local delicacies, don't miss Shifen Waterfall. The waterfall is often called Taiwan’s Niagara Falls due to its horseshoe shape and stunning cascade. The surrounding nature paths also provide a nice hike and photo opportunities. If you're curious about local traditions, try releasing sky lanterns along Shifen Old Street in the evening. Writing wishes on lanterns and watching them float up is a magical experience and a unique cultural activity. Transportation-wise, both Jiufen and Shifen are easily accessible by train and bus from Taipei. Planning these as a day trip is very doable, although staying overnight can be rewarding if you want to experience the night market lights at both towns. A personal tip: don’t rush through the popular tourist spots. Spend time savoring local snacks like taro balls with red beans or tofu pudding, which blend Taiwanese flavors wonderfully as you stroll the streets. For those wondering about nearby attractions, consider combining your trip with Yehliu Geopark to see fantastic rock formations or a visit to Yilan to explore more traditional Taiwanese culture. Both complement the natural beauty and cultural richness found in Jiufen and Shifen. In summary, Jiufen and Shifen are treasure troves of scenic views, delicious local tea and snacks, and memorable cultural experiences.
