... Read moreI recently went through the experience of having my Nexplanon implant removed and replaced, and I want to share what helped me the most during the process. First, it’s important to know that Nexplanon is a popular long-acting birth control method, inserted just under the skin of your upper arm and effective for up to three years. When it’s time for removal and replacement, it usually means your current implant is nearing expiration or you want to switch to continue contraceptive protection. The removal procedure is relatively quick but can be a bit uncomfortable. My healthcare provider made a small incision near the original insertion site, gently pushed out the implant, and then immediately inserted the new one on the same arm. Some mild soreness and bruising afterward are normal but tend to fade within a few days. I found that keeping the area clean and avoiding heavy lifting or intense physical activity for at least 24 hours helped my arm feel better faster. A key advantage of timing the removal and replacement appointment on the same day is that there’s minimal gap in contraceptive coverage, which was reassuring for me. It’s best to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider beforehand, especially if you experience side effects like irregular bleeding or pain, which can sometimes occur with Nexplanon. Lastly, I recommend asking your provider about what to expect with your next implant cycle and any signs to watch for afterward. This way, you can feel confident continuing your birth control method without interruption or surprise side effects. Overall, while the procedure was slightly nerve-wracking at first, a trusted healthcare provider and proper care made the transition smooth and effective.
