No More DMs?!
I was shocked to receive this message from Lemon 8 yesterday. They will be removing the direct messaging feature mid-August. I wonder why? 🤔
Okay, so I’m still reeling from that notification about Lemon8 removing DMs! Like many of you who might have seen your message icon disappear, I was completely caught off guard. I mean, my feed was just normal, and then BAM – a pop-up letting me know that direct messages are officially getting disabled on August 15th, 2024. It even showed that clear notification with the yellow speech bubbles and paper airplane icon. I immediately thought, 'No More DMs?! WHY?!' I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out why a platform focused on community and content sharing would ditch such a fundamental feature. My first thought was maybe it’s to encourage more public interaction? Perhaps Lemon8 wants us to connect more through comments on posts, fostering a more open and visible community. It could be about streamlining the app experience, making it less about private chats and more about discovering and creating content. Or maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with the challenges of moderating private messages. Keeping DMs safe and free from spam or inappropriate content can be a huge undertaking for any platform. If they're trying to focus their resources on other areas, this might be a strategic move. It’s definitely a big change, and it raises a lot of questions about how we’ll connect going forward. For those of us who use DMs to chat with friends, plan collaborations, or even just send a quick, encouraging note to another creator, it feels like a piece of our interaction is being taken away. The notification also specifically mentioned downloading your message data. This is super important, guys! If you have any ongoing conversations or information you want to save, make sure you download it before August 15th. I’m personally going through my old chats now, just in case there’s anything I need to keep. So, what does this mean for our Lemon8 community? I think it means we’ll have to get a bit more creative. We can still engage deeply in the comments section, replying to posts and building connections there. For more direct communication, perhaps we'll see people linking to other platforms in their bios, though that adds an extra step. It’s a shame to lose the convenience of in-app messaging, especially for quick questions or feedback. I hope Lemon8 has a plan to help bridge this gap, maybe with enhanced comment features or new ways to connect publicly. Have any of you already downloaded your message data? What are your thoughts on this change? Are you going to miss the direct message feature, or do you think it will push us towards more engaging public interactions? I’m genuinely curious to hear everyone's perspective on this!

Because they were multiple women who were getting asked the same question by the same three men and now they’re trying to block it and then bring it back that way the direct messaging can block certain words and spam
