What often goes unspoken is the layered reality of sacrifice, especially for marginalized communities. Black soldiers and Indigenous servicemembers historically fought valiantly while also battling systemic racism and exclusion from full citizenship. Immigrant and low-income families have also contributed heroically, often carrying unseen burdens at home and abroad. Recognizing these truths enriches our remembrance and honors their hidden struggles. The phrase "Freedom isn’t free" resonates deeply when we consider the sharp contrast between the ideal of liberty and the imperfect realities so many faced and continue to face. Memorial Day is a time to pause, honor the fallen, and acknowledge the complicated history intertwined with acts of courage. It reminds us to appreciate the sacrifices silently made for the freedoms some may take for granted. Each year, I try to engage in quiet moments of gratitude and learn more about military families' stories or support veterans’ organizations. These acts help keep the spirit of this day alive and relevant. Sharing these perspectives encourages others to look beyond the barbecues and sales and truly honor those who gave everything for this country.
