Fall Garden Goodies 🍂
As the fall season sets in, many gardeners find themselves surrounded by a bounty of unique garden treasures that are perfect for preserving and using throughout the colder months. In my experience, the transition from summer to fall is the ideal time to harvest not only typical vegetables but also herbs and flowers that add a special touch to your cooking and home. One of the most rewarding aspects of fall gardening is collecting herbs to dry and store. Herbs like thyme, sage, and rosemary retain much of their flavor when dried correctly. I typically gather these herbs in small bundles, tie them with string, and hang them upside down in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. This natural drying process helps preserve their oils, ensuring flavorful additions to my winter dishes. In addition to herbs, fall is the perfect time to collect what I call "garden goodies" such as marigolds and various types of tomatoes. Marigolds not only brighten the garden but also act as natural pest repellents, making them a useful and attractive plant to include. Their petals can be dried and used as a garnish or even added to salads for a splash of color. Tomatoes in the fall take on unique characteristics. For example, chocolate tomatoes, which have a rich, deep color and a sweet, complex flavor, are a favorite in my harvest. Interestingly, sometimes tomatoes may break off easily during picking, but instead of discarding them, I wash and incorporate them into sauces or salsas. This prevents waste and adds great flavor. Hot peppers are another fantastic fall crop that can be dried or turned into spicy condiments. Drying them prolongs their shelf life and opens up a world of culinary possibilities, from homemade chili powders to infused oils. Overall, the key to maximizing your fall garden goodies lies in timely harvesting and proper preservation methods. Whether you are drying herbs, picking vibrant marigolds, or harvesting chocolate and broken-off tomatoes, these practices help extend the joy and utility of your garden well beyond the growing season.
