Design a hot air home

A 200 square metre single-storey house suitable for Thai hot and humid air should have a design that helps to ventilate and reduce cumulative heat. Here are the recommended design guidelines:

1.House structure and direction

• Place the house on the long side facing north-south to reduce afternoon sun exposure from the west.

• Raise the floor 50 cm - 1 meter high, help to ventilate under the floor, reduce humidity and heat.

• Use moisture-resistant structural materials such as reinforced concrete, hardwood or light mass bricks.

2. Roof and eaves

• Use a gable or dusty roof to help ventilate the roof.

• Install blemishes or air vents under the roof for better heat transfer.

• Make at least 1.5-2 meters of eaves for sunscreen and rain

3. Ventilation system and opening

• Install large louvered or open windows in the north-south to catch natural winds.

• Use air vents over doors and windows to keep heat buoyant off the top.

• Design high ceilings (2.8 - 3.5 meters) to help cool houses

4. Building materials and surfaces

• Use light or white colors in walls and roofs to reflect heat.

• Folk opts for well-cooled ceramic or natural stone tiles.

• Exterior walls can use slats to help filter sunlight.

5. Garden and landscape

• Plant trees around homes, especially in the west and south, to help shade the sun.

• Make a well or garden area around the house to help reduce temperature and increase air humidity

• Use stone or brick block walkways with spaces between them, instead of cement floors to reduce heat accumulation.
