How ADHD folks take naps

Or, at least, this is how I do it! Thankfully, rest without sleep still helps. My mom taught me the art of “pretend napping” as a kid, and I still lean on that practice. How about you?? Are you a napper?

2025/6/7 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so true, trying to nap with ADHD can feel like an Olympic sport where your brain is constantly running marathons! The original post touched on 'pretend napping,' and I resonate with that so much. For me, the idea of just closing my eyes and drifting off peacefully often feels impossible. My ADHD brain, much like in the OCR images, often just sits there going, 'THIS IS SO BORING, I'M SO BORED!' It's a real struggle to switch off. One of the biggest hurdles is the constant internal monologue. Even when 'I GET COMFORTABLE,' my thoughts race, planning, remembering, or just creating elaborate scenarios. This is where tools become lifesavers. Like many of us, I often reach for my 'EARBUDS' and 'LISTEN TO AN AUDIOBOOK' or a podcast. It's not about being 'DISTRACTED BY THE BOOK' in a bad way, but rather giving my busy mind something specific to latch onto, a gentle anchor, instead of letting it bounce off every thought. Another game-changer is setting a 'TIMER.' For me, 20-30 minutes is ideal. The pressure of needing to fall asleep is often what keeps me awake. Knowing there's an end point, that I only have to endure the stillness for a set period, makes it much more manageable. Sometimes, I swear I just lie there, half-dozing, and then the 'TIMER STOPS,' and I'm genuinely surprised by how much better I feel. It's like my body got a mini-reboot even if my brain was only 'HALF ASLEEP.' What I've learned is that 'napping' for ADHD doesn't always have to mean deep sleep. Sometimes, it's just about intentional rest. This could be lying down in a dark room, eyes closed, doing a body scan meditation, or simply listening to calming music. The goal isn't necessarily to become completely unconscious, but to reduce sensory input and give your nervous system a much-needed break from the constant stimulation. Even if I don't fully drift off, that period of quiet stillness significantly reduces my evening overstimulation and helps with overall functioning. If you're like me and find traditional naps frustrating, try experimenting with what works for your ADHD brain. Maybe it's a specific type of background noise, a weighted blanket, or even just sitting comfortably in a quiet, dimly lit space with no distractions for 15 minutes. The key is to remove the pressure of "having" to sleep and focus on the benefit of simply *resting*. When I finally get up, even if I haven't truly slept, I often feel "SO RESTED YAY" – a testament to the power of deliberate downtime, no matter how it looks.
