Why do people treat loyalty like a punchline?

I went into our company party excited for free snacks until the conversation took a vile turn. A group of male coworkers, most married or in long-term relationships, started swapping stories like they were bragging about winning a office pool. They rated female colleagues on their “hotness,” joked about sneaking around with them, and casually admitted to cheating on their partners multiple times.

They acted like this was just normal. Like loyalty’s a punchline and commitment’s for suckers. I stood there sipping my soda, while they laughed about breaking someone’s trust like it’s no big deal. It made me sick to my stomach. If this is what “adult relationships” look like, treating your partner like an afterthought, prioritizing fleeting thrills over respect, I’d rather stay single forever.

Cheating isn’t a “guy thing” or a “harmless joke.” It’s betrayal. And normalizing it? That’s the real tragedy. Have you ever witnessed someone normalize cheating in casual conversation?

... Read moreThat work party moment still plays in my mind. Seeing cheating normalized and treated like a punchline by people who should know better was genuinely unsettling. It made me reflect deeply on why loyalty in relationships seems to be losing its value in some circles. Is it truly becoming a joke, something to be scoffed at rather than cherished? This casual dismissal of commitment isn't just a harmless observation; it chips away at the very foundation of trust that healthy relationships are built upon. When individuals openly brag about infidelity, it sends a dangerous message: that betrayal is trivial, and emotional pain is inconsequential. It suggests that personal accountability can be shrugged off, and that fleeting gratification triumphs over integrity. This isn't just about romantic relationships either; it spills over into how we view trust in friendships, family, and even professional environments. If loyalty is a relative concept, how can we truly rely on anyone? I've been trying to understand the 'why' behind this attitude. Is it insecurity masked as bravado? A misguided attempt to fit in with a certain 'locker room' culture? Or perhaps a deeper cynicism born from past experiences? Whatever the root, it’s alarming to witness how easily some can disconnect from the emotional impact of their actions on others. It’s a stark reminder that empathy, a cornerstone of human connection, can sometimes be alarmingly absent. Encountering such conversations, especially in a professional setting like a work party – perhaps while grabbing some appetizers from the buffet table – can leave you feeling isolated and disheartened. It’s important to remember that their normalization of cheating doesn't invalidate your own convictions. It's crucial to hold onto your personal values, even when they seem to be at odds with the prevailing casual sentiment. You don't have to engage or condone. Sometimes, simply choosing to remove yourself from the conversation, or quietly expressing disapproval through your demeanor, can be a powerful statement. Loyalty isn't antiquated; it's a timeless virtue that underpins all meaningful human connections. It's about respect, honesty, and consistency. To declare 'loyalty is a joke' is to diminish the profound effort and vulnerability required to build and maintain trust. It implies that commitment is a burden, rather than a choice that enriches our lives and provides stability. Ultimately, we all have a role to play in fostering a culture where loyalty is valued, not ridiculed. It starts with our own actions and how we communicate our expectations and boundaries. If we want genuine, lasting relationships, we must champion the principles of trust and fidelity. So, if you've ever felt that sting of disappointment when cheating’s normalized around you, know that your feelings are valid. It's a sign that you understand the true weight and worth of loyalty, and that's something worth standing for. Let's keep the conversation going about why loyalty matters and why it's anything but a punchline.

My fiancé was telling me a few years ago about how some guys he knew were doing a bachelor party weekend and his buddy came home and told him all about the trip…. He talked about how wasted everyone got (why is getting that drunk so normalized) and then they got their buddy some strippers and the groom slept with one

I used to work at a club and some guys came in on their work trip. Most of them married. A lot of of them trying to take women home that night. It was absolutely disgusting.

Never trust anyone
"Never trust anyone" is a harsh mantra, but one that can serve as a shield in a world where vulnerability can be exploited. It's not about living in isolation, but about being cautious and discerning about who you let into your inner circle. Trust must be earned, and even then, it's

Is staying loyal the bare minimum?
I once dated someone who thought that staying loyal was all it took to be a good partner. But boy, was he wrong. Loyalty is important, sure, but it’s not the only thing that matters in a relationship. You can’t treat someone poorly and then expect them to be grateful just because you didn’t cheat.
