FRAMED Dorm Art… For less than $20 each!
Here’s how we made these framed prints for my daughter’s dorm room! 😌
1) We bought a pack of 5 canvases from @Hobby Lobby (16” x 20”) 🖼️ Only $13 for all 5!
2) We took the canvas fabric completely off of each of the wooden frames. 🤠 Then, all staples that were not completely flat were pulled out.
3) Any gaps in the wooden canvas frames were filled in with wood filler and then lightly sanded to a smooth finish. 💪
4) The frames were spray painted gold and faux gold leaf was applied. 🌟
5) We purchased a bundle of digital downloads of the art on ETSY. All 3 images were less than $5 and we got them instantly in my email inbox! 😍
6) Each digital file was uploaded to @Walgreens photo, and we ordered a 16” x 20” poster on board for each print. We had an online code, so each print was $13 each. (Don’t worry, Walgreens photo has some kind of discount code almost every week!) ❤️
7) We took our prints - (already mounted on boards for us by @Walgreens; so nice!) - and we used two-sided craft tape from @TheDollarTree to mount the art to the frames from behind. (We did all 3 w 1 roll of tape that was only $1.25! 🙌)
8) We used gold foil washi tape from @Hobby Lobby to hide any gap between the side of the frames and the artwork, applying it neatly on the side of the frames, folded over to the back. ⭐️
9) 3M Command Velcro Strips were used to hang the art on the wall. This will make it easy to remove them at the end of the year. 😌
10) Voila! We love 💕 how the art looked in my daughter’s dorm room! 🥰

Creating a cozy and stylish dorm room is all about making that small space feel like your own, and what better way to do that than with art? When I was helping my daughter decorate her room, we realized that Matisse posters, especially those iconic cut-outs, are an absolute game-changer for dorm bedroom walls. They bring such a vibrant, sophisticated yet playful energy that's perfect for a college environment. So, why Matisse for a dorm, you ask? Well, his "PAPIERS DÉCOUPÉS" series, or "The Cut-Outs," are incredibly versatile. You see those beautiful abstract shapes in pink, blue, and green from the OCR? They're inspired by Matisse's later work where he 'painted with scissors.' The bold, clean lines and often bright, contrasting colors instantly lift a room's aesthetic. They're modern enough to appeal to today's design trends, yet classic enough to evoke a sense of artistic history. Plus, they're universally appealing, so they can easily complement various dorm decor styles, from minimalist to bohemian. When you're thinking about displaying Matisse posters, consider the overall vibe you want. My daughter absolutely loves hers hanging above her bed, creating a focal point. You can create a mini gallery wall with a few different Matisse prints in varying sizes, or pair one large print with smaller, complementary pieces—maybe some personal photos or other abstract art. The key is to think about color harmony. If your dorm has a neutral base, a vibrant Matisse print can add that much-needed pop of color. Or, if you have a specific color scheme, you can find Matisse pieces that incorporate those hues. Beyond simply framing them, there are other creative ways to showcase these beautiful prints. For a super temporary and budget-friendly option, you could use decorative washi tape directly on the wall to create a border around the poster. This works great if frames aren't allowed or if you want a more casual, unframed look. Clear clip frames are another fantastic choice for a sleek, minimalist display that lets the art speak for itself. Or, if you're like us and love the look of framed art but are on a budget, sourcing digital prints from sites like Etsy, as we did, is brilliant. You get instant access to a huge variety of Henri Matisse-inspired art, including "The Cut-Outs," often for just a few dollars, and then you can print them affordably. Ultimately, adding a Matisse poster to your dorm room wall is more than just decor; it's an expression of personality and a way to make your temporary living space truly feel like home. It’s amazing how a few well-placed art pieces can transform a sterile dorm room into a vibrant, inspiring sanctuary. Give it a try – you'll be surprised at the impact!
