How to clean when it’s just so overwhelming

2023/7/13 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so real how overwhelming cleaning can feel, especially when you're navigating life with ADHD. That feeling of staring at a cluttered room or a cluttered desk and not knowing where to start can be paralyzing. The good news is, you're not alone, and there are ADHD cleaning hacks and strategies that can genuinely make a difference, turning that mountain into manageable molehills. One of the biggest hurdles for us can be executive dysfunction – the difficulty with planning, initiating tasks, and maintaining focus. This is why conventional cleaning advice often doesn't stick. We need approaches that work with our brains, not against them. Just like hitting play on some music can create that focus tunnel, as you mentioned, there are other ADHD cleaning tips that can help kickstart momentum. Breaking Down the Overwhelm: Instead of thinking "I need to clean my entire room," try to zoom in on one tiny, achievable task. This is where the beauty of the before and after transformation really lies – celebrating those small wins. The "One Thing" Rule: Pick one item to put away, one piece of trash to throw out. That's it. Often, that one thing leads to another, and before you know it, you've gained some momentum. Time Blocking (Micro Bursts): Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes. Tell yourself you only have to clean for that short period. When the timer goes off, you can stop, no guilt. You'd be surprised how much you can get done, and sometimes, you'll feel motivated to keep going. This is a great way to schedule house cleaning in small, non-threatening chunks. Body Doubling: Whether it's a friend on a video call, a family member tidying alongside you, or even background noise like a podcast, having a "body double" can significantly improve focus and task initiation for ADHD brains. It creates a sense of accountability and shared effort. Tackling Specific Clutter Zones (Beyond the Initial Clean Up): Once you've done that initial clean up of trash, clothes, and flat surfaces like your desk or dresser, the challenge often shifts to maintaining it. Designated Homes: Every item needs a home. If something doesn't have a place, it becomes clutter. This might mean investing in some simple baskets or drawer organizers. Don't aim for perfection; aim for functionality. The "Landing Strip" Concept: Create specific spots near entryways for keys, wallets, bags, etc. This prevents these items from migrating to your desk or other surfaces and creating new clutter piles. Vertical Storage: Use shelves, wall organizers, and stackable bins to utilize vertical space. This is a game-changer for small rooms or cluttered areas. "Reset Button" Routines: Establish a very quick, non-negotiable end-of-day routine. This could be 5 minutes of tidying your bedside table, putting away two items, or making sure your bed is made (or at least partially straightened) each morning. This differs from adhd vs normal cleaning habits because it's about building micro-habits that are easily maintained, rather than rigid, extensive daily chores. Finding Your Cleaning Motivation: Sometimes, the biggest hurdle is just getting started. Gamify It: Turn cleaning into a game. Can you beat your time from last week? Can you tidy 10 items in 2 minutes? Instant Gratification: Pair cleaning with something enjoyable. Listen to your favorite album, a new podcast, or save a TV show episode to watch only while cleaning. Visualize the After: Remind yourself how good it feels to walk into a clean, organized space. Look at those after photos! This can be a powerful motivator to keep a clean house with ADHD. Remember, cleaning with ADHD isn't about being perfect; it's about finding systems that work for you and celebrating every step of progress. Don't let the idea of a "perfectly clean house" prevent you from making your space functional and comfortable. Even a small clean up can significantly reduce stress and improve your mental well-being. If you find yourself consistently struggling, don't hesitate to look for help cleaning house resources, whether it's delegating tasks, hiring occasional help, or seeking support from friends and family.
