The Caminito del Ray, Spain 🇪🇸

The Caminito del Rey, located in Málaga within Spain’s Andalusia region, is a thrilling walkway suspended along the sheer cliffs of the El Chorro Gorge. Originally built in 1905 for workers to access the hydroelectric plant, it has since been renovated into a breathtaking trail renowned for its dramatic views and heart-pounding heights. Stretching nearly 8 kilometers (5 miles), it offers a combination of nature, history, and adrenaline for adventurous travelers.

Tips for visiting Caminito del Rey:

1. Book Tickets in Advance: Due to its popularity, tickets sell out quickly—reserve yours ahead of time.

2. Wear Comfortable Shoes: A good pair of hiking shoes or sneakers is essential for safety and comfort.

3. Bring Water and Snacks: There are no vendors along the trail, so come prepared for the journey.

4. Plan for Transportation: The trail is linear, so arrange a return shuttle or transportation from the exit point.

5. Check the Weather: Avoid visiting during extreme heat or rainy days, as conditions can be challenging.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about the incredible Caminito del Rey near Málaga, and I promise you, it lives up to the hype! But beyond the basic tips, I wanted to share a few extra insights I gathered, especially regarding some questions that often pop up when planning this epic adventure. First off, let's talk about family planning. "What's the minimum age for the Caminito del Rey?" is a common query, and I found out that children must be at least 8 years old to walk the trail. This is a strict rule for safety, given the heights and the nature of the path. So, if you're traveling with younger kids, you'll need to make alternative arrangements for them. It’s definitely not a place for strollers! Now, for those of you planning a bigger Spanish adventure, you might be wondering, "How do I get to the Caminito del Rey from Seville?" This was a big question for me too, as I was exploring Andalusia. While driving is an option (it's about a 2-hour drive from Seville to the starting point near Ardales, or from Málaga it's closer to an hour), public transport is totally doable. You can take a train from Seville Santa Justa station to El Chorro (the closest station to the Caminito). From El Chorro station, there's usually a shuttle bus that takes you to the northern entrance. Always check train schedules in advance, as they can be infrequent, especially on weekends. It's truly worth the journey from wherever you're staying in the Málaga region or even further afield. Speaking of the trail itself, a lot of people ask about a detailed "Caminito del Rey map" or want to know what the views are really like – beyond just "breathtaking photos." The official maps you get are great for orientation, but the real experience unfolds as you walk. You'll traverse a variety of paths: some are well-maintained forest trails, but the most famous sections are the narrow wooden boardwalks bolted directly into the sheer rock face of the Gaitanes Gorge. There are parts where the old, dilapidated original path is visible just below you, giving a real sense of its history and the challenging renovation. My favorite bits were definitely the hanging bridge at the end and the sections where the transparent floor lets you look straight down into the river below – it gives you goosebumps! What struck me most was the incredible geology, with layers of rock sculpted by thousands of years of water erosion. You're truly walking through a natural masterpiece. After completing the Caminito del Rey, which typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours, you'll likely be hungry and buzzing with adrenaline. Don't rush off! The area around El Chorro offers some charming local restaurants where you can grab a well-deserved meal and reflect on your adventure. And if you're like me and love to explore, consider spending some more time around Málaga. The city itself boasts a vibrant culture, delicious food (hello, tapas!), and historical sites like the Alcazaba and Picasso Museum. Or, venture into some of the nearby "pueblos blancos" (white villages) like Álora, which offer another authentic slice of Andalusian life. The whole area is perfect for combining an active adventure with cultural immersion and relaxation. It really makes the journey to the Caminito del Rey a full and enriching experience!
