Everything in my Waitress Folder

Hihi!!

I thought I’d show everything I’m keeping in my waitress folder as a brand new server!! I’ve never been a waitress before, so I’m excited, but I thought I would show everything I’m going to be keeping in my folder until I have the menu studied better :)

2025/6/23 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started as a server, the sheer volume of menu items felt like climbing a mountain! My little green folder has become my absolute lifesaver, but beyond just having the information, actually knowing the menu deeply takes some strategy. For anyone else navigating 'the menu waitress' challenge, here's how I approach it and some tips I've picked up. First, I break the menu down into manageable sections. The 'hand-cut steaks' section, prominently featured in my Texas Roadhouse folder, is a big one. Customers often have specific questions, so I make sure to really nail this. That amazing steak doneness guide in my folder is a visual godsend, showing exactly what a rare, medium-rare, medium, medium-well, and well-done steak should look like. But beyond the visuals, I’ve learned to differentiate between our Sirloin, Ribeye, and Filet – not just by name, but by their characteristics: a Ribeye for its marbling and flavor, a Sirloin for being lean and hearty, and a Filet for its incredible tenderness. I practice describing these to myself, imagining I'm selling them to a guest. My handwritten 'selling words' in the folder are pure gold here. Instead of just asking, 'Do you want a steak?', I might suggest, 'Our hand-cut Fort Worth Ribeye is perfectly marbled and cooked to your liking tonight – have you tried it?' This makes a huge difference in guest experience and helps me upsell. Learning the nuances of the 'Texas Size Combos' also helps me guide guests who want to try a bit of everything. Then there are the sides and drinks – equally important! Knowing the ingredients in our most popular sides and being ready with drink recommendations (like our legendary margaritas or specific draft beers) can really enhance the guest experience and, let's be honest, boost your tips! My folder has separate inserts for liquor, red wines, white/blush wines, and bottled beverages, which are fantastic for quick reference. That handwritten note in my folder about food modifications is absolutely crucial. Guests often have allergies or dietary preferences, so knowing what can be substituted or altered without having to run to the kitchen every time saves so much time and stress for both me and the kitchen staff. It's all about being prepared! Having my notepad and pen always ready helps me jot down orders accurately, but also quick notes or questions I have about menu items during a quieter moment. And that little handwritten motivational quote? Honestly, some shifts, it’s exactly what I need to see to keep my spirits up! It’s my little secret weapon for staying positive. My biggest personal tip for any new server focusing on 'the menu waitress' aspect is constant review. Even after you feel you know it, glance over your folder before your shift. Quiz yourself on appetizers, kids' meals, and especially those liquor and wine options. Understanding the difference between 'well,' 'call,' and 'premium' liquors, and being able to suggest a good white or blush wine, makes you look so much more confident and knowledgeable. Also, observing experienced servers – how do they describe the Texas Size Combos? What are their go-to recommendations? Learning from them is invaluable. This folder isn't just for learning; it's a security blanket. It gives me confidence knowing I have all the answers right there if I forget something on the fly. It truly is my starter kit!

This would stress me out lol the only things I have in my server book are my pad to write orders on, my receipts people put their tips on throughout the day, a few lunch cards to hand to people (Applebees lunch shift), and a sticker a little girl at one of my tables gave me like a year ago. And then I use the back of my pad to write down my tips from the day.

I’ve seen these all over my feed and I love to see what’s in everyone’s books. Mine is pretty boring as I compare. I’ve got a pretty beat up corner(should I do something to cover it?) a liquor list and my sign in sheet! ⭐️Overall rating: 6/10: #waitress #waitressbook #restaurant
