Big chop ✂️ any tips?
So I got a haircut august 9th! Since cutting it, i have been doing some little extra trims to get rid of dead/damaged ends, my curl pattern is slowly getting tighter again, and I have been experimenting with my routine/products!
It has grown since these photos and I’ve also learned more about my hair, so I would love some tips!! I have low porosity hair and struggle with retaining moisture 🥲

Taking the leap for a big chop is such a liberating experience! I remember the mix of excitement and nerves right before I went for it, wanting to shed all the damage and embrace my natural curls. It truly felt like a fresh start for my hair health, and seeing those 'Big chop inspo' pictures definitely gave me the courage I needed. If you're on the fence, I say go for it – the healthy hair journey is so rewarding! After the chop, the immediate change was definitely striking. Suddenly, I had these beautiful, short, curly natural hair coils that were popping like never before. It took a little getting used to styling such a short length, but I quickly fell in love with the newfound bounce and freshness. My curl pattern really started to define itself, which was amazing to see. My hair felt so light and free, and I was excited to start experimenting with new routines to keep it that way. One of my biggest challenges, as some of you might relate, is dealing with low porosity hair and its stubborn way of retaining moisture. I’ve learned that for low porosity hair, the cuticles lay very flat, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate and stay in. My go-to strategy now involves using warm water during my wash routine to help open up those cuticles, and I even do a steam treatment once a month. I've found that lighter, water-based products work best for me – think leave-in conditioners and curl creams that aren't too heavy. I avoid thick butters and oils that tend to just sit on top of my hair, making it feel greasy and weighed down instead of truly moisturized. Deep conditioning with heat is also a game-changer for really getting that hydration in! For low maintenance short natural haircuts, a good wash-and-go is my absolute savior. I've perfected my technique for defining my curls right after washing. Applying my products to soaking wet hair helps ensure even distribution and better curl clump definition. I also focus on getting those defined edges to complete the look. During the week, I might do some quick finger coiling for any sections that need a refresh. Accessories like headbands or cute clips are fantastic for quick styling when you're short on time. For night-time, a satin bonnet or pillowcase is non-negotiable to protect those precious curls and prevent frizz. Finding the right routine for your chopped curls is a journey of trial and error, but it's so worth it! My current routine starts with a gentle clarifying shampoo, followed by a super-hydrating deep conditioner. Then, I layer a lightweight leave-in, a curl cream, and finally, a soft-hold gel to lock everything in. I’ve learned to listen to my hair and adjust products based on how it feels. Don't be afraid to try different brands and product lines until you discover what truly makes your natural hair shine. Every curl is unique, and customizing your regimen is key to healthy, happy hair after a big chop!

I did the big chop in 2020 and my biggest tip is put some type of moisture in your hair everyday !! Water , curl cream , oil , something it helps hair growth a lot. I grew back all my hair so fast and then some. it's way more healthy now too 😍
