Day 1 of No spend January

2025/1/12 Edited to

... Read moreStarting a 'NO SPEND JANUARY' challenge has been on my mind for a while, and I finally decided to dive in! It’s more than just saving money; for me, it's about resetting my financial habits and becoming more intentional with my spending. If you've been thinking about trying a 'no spend challenge,' let me share some of my initial thoughts and strategies that I'm hoping will make this a success. One of the biggest lessons I've learned even before starting is that Habits to Plan For are crucial. You can't just wake up on January 1st and expect magic. For instance, a huge money drain for me is buying lunch at work. So, my concrete plan is to pack my lunch every single day. This simple change, avoiding 'buring lunch at work,' can save a significant amount over the month. I've already prepped a grocery list focusing on easy, affordable lunch ingredients. It’s all about anticipating those moments where you usually reach for your wallet. Another key part of this challenge is truly trimming unnecessary expenses. I've spent some time going through my bank statements to identify where my money really goes. Those impulse buys, the daily coffee runs, or even subscriptions I barely use – they all add up. For this month, I'm cutting out all non-essential purchases. This means no new clothes, no eating out (unless it's a pre-planned, essential social event where I contribute to a shared meal), and definitely no online shopping for things I don't absolutely need. It sounds tough, but I see it as an opportunity to get creative and appreciate what I already have. To make this 'money challenge' work, having a clear set of rules is vital. My rules are simple: only spend money on absolute necessities like rent, utilities, existing loan payments, and groceries. Anything else is a no-go. I’m also using a spending tracker app, just like I mentioned in my initial post, to keep myself accountable. Seeing where every penny goes helps to stay on track and makes you think twice before making a purchase. What helps me stay motivated is focusing on the 'why.' Why am I doing this? To build up my savings, to pay down some debt, and honestly, to feel more in control of my finances. It’s not about deprivation; it’s about redirection. I’m redirecting my money towards my financial goals instead of fleeting satisfactions. I'm also looking for free ways to entertain myself – walks in the park, library books, movie nights at home with snacks I already have. If you're considering your own 'no spend challenge,' here are some quick tips I'm using: Define your "needs" vs. "wants" very clearly. This will be your guiding principle. Stock up on essentials before the challenge begins. Don't buy anything just because it's on sale right before. Cook at home. This is probably the biggest money-saver. Find free activities. Explore nature, local free events, or rediscover hobbies at home. Prepare for social situations. If friends are going out, suggest a potluck or coffee at your place. Keep track! Whether it’s an app or a simple notebook, monitoring your progress is incredibly motivating. This 'NO SPEND JANUARY' is a personal experiment, and I'm excited to see how much I can learn and save. It's Day 1, and the journey has just begun, but I feel prepared and motivated. Wish me luck!

No spend (week 1 recap). Jan 1st- 7th
Last year, we did 3 no-spend months(Jan-March) and we paid off $25,000 in credit card debt. That choice led us to buying our home last summer ♥️ This year we are doing it again and I’m sharing it with you! Let’s make 2026 the year of intentional spending. 🫶🏻 #budgeting #reallifeathome

No spend January 💰💸🛑
My goal is to not do unnecessary spending for the month of January. To me that includes buying clothes or shoes, cooking more at home than getting fast food. Coffee I can make at home. One thing I won’t stop doing is getting my nails done but what I will do is try to spend less on my nails.

No-Spend January isn’t about punishment, restriction, or pretending we don’t want things. It’s about pausing long enough to notice why we reach for our wallets in the first place. After a busy, expensive holiday season, January feels like the perfect reset. Not a “new year, new me” kind of reset —
