Through my curly hair journey, these are my favs <3
Growing up, I always had silicon mix products and Crece Pelo in my routine—if you're Hispanic, you know how good those are! The Silicon Mix deep conditioners are a game-changer, especially the argan oil one, which tames my frizz and makes detangling a breeze. Here’s a look at the Crece Pelo products I love and stand by!
I’ve been using Herbal Essences for a 2 years now. I love it a lot. I bought it cuz I wanted a conditioner that has a thick scent and last long and the Jojoba oil one works so well. Smells so much like lavender it really makes my hair feel so smooth.
I always use my deep conditions after using Herbal Essences and my hair feels even better.
What are your go-to curly hair favorites on wash day?"
... Read moreOkay, so Blairberries shared some fantastic staples for wash day, and I totally get the love for Silicon Mix and Crece Pelo – they're legendary! But having been on my own curly hair journey, especially with my 3b/3c curls, I've picked up a few more tricks and products that have made a massive difference. For me, wash day isn't just about shampoo and conditioner; it's a whole ritual that starts even before I step into the shower.
First off, have you tried a pre-poo treatment? Seriously, it’s a game-changer for detangling. I often use a mix of oils like coconut or olive oil, or even a light conditioner, and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before shampooing. It creates a protective barrier, reducing friction and breakage during washing, especially if your hair is prone to knots like mine.
When it comes to shampoo, I've learned that not all 'strengthening shampoos' are created equal. While Blairberries mentioned a great affordable one, I also look for sulfate-free options to prevent stripping my hair's natural oils. On occasion, maybe once a month, I'll use a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup – it's like hitting a reset button for my curls, making them feel lighter and bouncier.
After shampoo, a good curl-defining conditioner is key. I sometimes finger-detangle with conditioner still in my hair under running water to ensure every strand is coated. And deep conditioning? Absolutely non-negotiable! The argan oil treatment Blairberries loves sounds amazing, and I’m a huge fan of anything with argan, macadamia oil, or keratin, as the OCR mentioned. These ingredients really penetrate and provide intense moisture, which is crucial for preventing frizz and promoting softness. I usually leave my deep conditioner in for at least 30 minutes, sometimes with a heat cap for extra penetration.
Once out of the shower, the next steps are just as important. A good leave-in conditioner is my first layer of moisture. I apply it while my hair is still dripping wet to really lock in hydration. Then, depending on the look I’m going for, I'll layer a curl cream, a gel, or even a mousse. For defined curls with good hold, I swear by applying gel using the 'praying hands' method, then scrunching gently. Drying is also crucial – I either micro-plop with a cotton t-shirt to remove excess water without creating frizz, or use a diffuser on low heat and speed. Air-drying is also an option, but diffusing gives me more volume and quicker results.
And don't forget nighttime care! Sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wrapping your hair in a silk scarf can significantly reduce frizz and preserve your curls for days. It's all about consistency and finding what works for your specific curl type. Experimenting with different 'curly hair wash day products' has been a journey, but these additions to my routine have truly elevated my results, bringing me closer to those consistently defined, healthy, and happy curls we all strive for!
