Enchanting Places to visit in Upstate New York

When visiting New York, be sure to visit the Finger Lakes region, famous for its incredible waterfalls, one of the best places to visit for waterfalls is Watkins Glen State Park near the south end of Seneca Lake.

The Gorge Trail passes one cascading waterfall after another and passes serene views of mossy stone walls and pretty stone bridges!

You’ll want to make your way all the way to Rainbow Falls for the iconic scene!

1.5 miles, out and back, easy

This trail closes in the winter as it’s too dangerous when there’s ice

You can also hike the North Rim Trail and South Rim Trail, which are open year round! Although you don’t get the famous waterfall views

North Rim Trail: 1.1 miles

South Rim Trail: 1.8 miles

Tips: Start at the Watkins Glen State Park Gift Shop at 1000 Franklin Street near the village of Watkins Glen

The parking area is small, so try to avoid weekends if possible and come early!

Finger Lakes
2024/8/5 Edited to

... Read moreI recently revisited Watkins Glen State Park, and it truly is a photographer's paradise, especially if you're looking for those 'beautiful nature images' that make your followers swoon! Beyond just hiking, this park offers endless opportunities to capture breathtaking shots. Firstly, let's talk about the light. Early mornings are magical. The sun filters through the lush greenery, creating soft, ethereal glows that illuminate the cascading waterfalls. You can really get some incredible shots of the water mist against the layered rock formations. The Gorge Trail, with its winding path and numerous stone bridges, provides so many unique angles. Don't forget to look up at the deep gorge walls – the textures are incredible! My favorite spot for photos has to be by the curtain waterfall. Standing on the wooden pathway behind the falling water gives you such a dramatic perspective. It’s perfect for capturing that sense of immersion in nature. And, of course, Rainbow Falls is iconic for a reason – try to visit when the sun is at its peak to catch a rainbow in the mist! Beyond Watkins Glen, the entire Finger Lakes region is bursting with photogenic spots. If you're chasing more 'beautiful nature images,' consider exploring other state parks nearby. Taughannock Falls State Park, for example, boasts a waterfall even taller than Niagara Falls, providing a stunning backdrop. Robert H. Treman State Park has beautiful trails and swimming holes perfect for capturing both vibrant nature and serene moments. And don't limit yourself to just waterfalls! The serene lakes themselves, like Seneca Lake mentioned in the article, offer gorgeous sunrise and sunset views. Imagine capturing the golden hour light reflecting off the calm water, surrounded by rolling hills. Vineyards dotted along the lake shores also add a unique, picturesque charm, especially in autumn. Winter, though the Gorge Trail is closed, offers a completely different kind of beauty. The frozen waterfalls and snow-dusted landscapes can create truly stunning, almost otherworldly 'nature images.' Just remember to stick to the North or South Rim Trails for safety, and dress warmly! For aspiring nature photographers, a few tips from my experience: bring a sturdy tripod for long exposure shots of the waterfalls, which creates that silky smooth water effect. A wide-angle lens is fantastic for capturing the vastness of the deep gorge and the overall scenic view. Don't forget a polarizing filter to reduce glare on the water and make the lush greenery pop. The wooden pathway itself can be a great leading line in your compositions. Always protect your camera from the constant spray near the falls – a waterproof cover is a lifesaver! It’s all about embracing the beauty around you and finding your unique perspective. Happy snapping and enjoy capturing those perfect Upstate NY memories!
