Tips for growing peppers?

Hey all!!! I’ve started growing peppers! I only have three plants - a sweet pepper plant, habanero plant, and a hot pepper plant. I got them at a greenhouse clearance sale and I’m going to be honest, I’m not sure what I’m doing. I’ve transplanted them into a 5 gallon bucket and I try not to overwater. I have one cute lil pepper so far as you can see in the picture! Any tips or advice?

... Read moreGrowing peppers can be a rewarding gardening experience, especially for first-timers. As you nurture your sweet pepper, habanero, and hot pepper plants, remember that these crops thrive in warm temperatures and require plenty of sunlight—ideally 6 to 8 hours a day. Overwatering is a common mistake; it's important to let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Improper watering can lead to root rot, which will hamper plant growth. Instead, check the soil moisture by sticking your finger about an inch deep—if it's dry, it's time to water. Additionally, consider using well-draining soil mixed with compost to provide the nutrients your pepper plants need. Fertilizing is also crucial for healthy growth. A balanced fertilizer, applied during the growing season, can boost production and improve flavor. If you're growing in a container, be mindful that nutrients can wash away with regular watering, so additional feeding may be required. Another tip is to regularly check for pests like aphids and spider mites. Early detection is key; using insecticidal soap can help manage these pests effectively without harming beneficial insects. Lastly, consider the spacing of your plants. Allow for adequate airflow between them to prevent disease and promote healthier growth. With these tips, your pepper plants will flourish, providing you with a delicious harvest right from your backyard!

Lots of sun and if you have smaller plants right now cut the tops so they can get bushy. Just the very top of each shoot. Watch under the leaves for aphids and if you have them just wipe your leaves off with some soapy water.

An infographic titled 'WRONG DEPTH, WASTED ROOTS' illustrates optimal raised bed depths for various crops. It shows 6-inch beds for lettuce, radishes, herbs; 12-inch for peppers, bush beans, cucumbers; 18-inch for tomatoes, carrots, potatoes; and 24-inch for asparagus, sweet potatoes, and artichokes, emphasizing matching depth to root needs.
Pick the right height for a raised bed.
Every raised bed the same height means some crops get too little soil and others get more than they'll ever use. Each crop's root system needs a specific depth. Too shallow and roots hit bottom, fork, and starve the plant. Too deep and you're paying for soil that nothing reaches.
