the movie that broke the Chinese box office
I need to preface by saying that I am normally not a fan of cinema but my dad kept recommending this movie until curiousity got the better of me. I was quite stunned by the length of the movie; a cartoon movie that is 2.5 hours does sound a bit overkill. But tldr; I think this is great movie that is definitely worth that time.
First and my most favorite thing; the animation. By Lord the animation is gorgeous. I am a fan of Japanese style anime and manga, but everything was so beautifully and powerfully animated, in a way that really draws you into the world of Chinese mythology. The aesthetic is one that really pays homage to the Chinese artistic style, from the crisp whiteness of the Chan sect’s palaces, to the chubby ruddiness of Master Taiyi’s face, to Nezha’s devilish attitude, to the ethereal flowing lines of the Loong family’s dragon forms. It rivals Japanese animation in attention to detail and its ability to convey emotion.
I did enjoy the character development. Nezha is truly annoying at first and I think that is a good thing because a character that is able to invoke strong feelings in a viewer is always better than one which is bland and colorless. Master Taiyi is absolutely hilarious and wonderful comic relief. Ao Bing is your typical ‘good boy’ that can do no wrong (and pretty hot to tell you the truth, I felt a bit bad because I was getting the hots for animated men when my husband is sitting beside me HAHAHAH 👀)
Nezha 2 has the typical Confucian tropes of working hard and filial piety. You don’t need to watch the first movie to understand the storyline, and more importantly, to enjoy it. The length of the movie had me fidgeting a little bit, but the story truly captivated my heart and kept me on edge. To me, it’s like the finding nemo Asian-version; something in there for adults and kids alike.
