Life Hack: Garden edition 🍅🌱

✨It’s life hack time!!! 😁✨

Everyone who has a large garden knows the struggle of finding the time to pick everything you’ve grown before something else eats it or it rots up! If you’re canning what you’ve harvested too that can really be time consuming as well.

We planted 15 tomato plants in our garden this year and are slowly starting to see some red ❤️. However, with them slowly turning it makes wanting to can them really hard. Because before you know it the red ones will start going bad!

I have started freezing ❄️🧊 my whole tomatoes just as I pick them. That way when I have the perfect amount to can I just get them all out of the freezer and can do it all in one day and not have any waste! 👏🏻

All you have to do when you are ready to can them is get them out of the freezer, wash them off and put them under hot water! It’ll help to remove the skins off of them! #gardentipsforyou #gardenhacks #gardening101 #gardentok

2025/7/27 Edited to

... Read moreGardening enthusiasts often face the seasonal challenge of harvesting ripe produce while keeping it fresh for future use. Preserving tomatoes, a garden staple, can be particularly time-consuming, especially when managing bulk quantities. Freezing whole tomatoes immediately after picking is an excellent method to prolong freshness and minimize waste. This technique allows gardeners to accumulate enough tomatoes to can all at once, saving valuable time and effort compared to frequently canning smaller batches. When ready to can, thawed tomatoes benefit from a quick rinse and blanching in hot water, which significantly eases skin removal. This step is essential as removing tomato skins improves texture and flavor in canned tomato products like sauces and stews. Additionally, blanching helps eliminate surface bacteria, enhancing the safety and shelf life of canned goods. Experts recommend selecting fully ripe but firm tomatoes for freezing to maximize quality after thawing. Using airtight freezer bags or containers prevents freezer burn and maintains tomato integrity. Labeling packages with the freezing date ensures optimal use within 6 to 12 months. Beyond freezing and canning, gardeners should consider integrating other preservation methods such as dehydrating or making tomato preserves and chutneys to diversify how they use abundant harvests. This life hack not only streamlines garden vegetable management but also contributes to sustainable food practices by reducing spoilage and waste. It empowers garden lovers to enjoy their fresh produce throughout the year effortlessly.

An infographic titled 'WRONG DEPTH, WASTED ROOTS' illustrates optimal raised bed depths for various crops. It shows 6-inch beds for lettuce, radishes, herbs; 12-inch for peppers, bush beans, cucumbers; 18-inch for tomatoes, carrots, potatoes; and 24-inch for asparagus, sweet potatoes, and artichokes, emphasizing matching depth to root needs.
Pick the right height for a raised bed.
Every raised bed the same height means some crops get too little soil and others get more than they'll ever use. Each crop's root system needs a specific depth. Too shallow and roots hit bottom, fork, and starve the plant. Too deep and you're paying for soil that nothing reaches.
