... Read moreUnderstanding your hair porosity is essential for a personalized hair care routine, especially for type 4a natural hair, which tends to be dense and prone to dryness. Hair porosity refers to how well your hair can absorb and retain moisture, which affects everything from product choice to styling methods. One simple test to determine porosity is the float test: place a strand of clean hair in a glass of water. If it sinks quickly, your hair has high porosity, meaning it absorbs moisture fast but also loses it quickly. If it floats, your hair has low porosity, which means it repels moisture and can be resistant to product absorption. Hair that floats somewhere in between is normal porosity. Hair density, on the other hand, refers to how many strands grow per square inch on your scalp. To assess density, part your hair and observe how much scalp shows. High density means more strands packed closely, while low density means fewer strands. Knowing your density helps in choosing the right volume and weight of products. For 4a hair types, moisturizing and sealing are key due to the natural curl pattern's tendency to restrict oils from traveling down the hair shaft. When you know your porosity and density, you can select products that suit your hair better—for example, lighter oils and leave-in conditioners for low porosity hair and heavier butters for high porosity hair. Personal experience has shown that investing time in understanding these characteristics can change your hair's health dramatically. Regular deep conditioning treatments and protective styles minimize breakage and encourage flourishing hair growth toward your 2026 hair goals. Track how your hair responds to changes so you can fine-tune your regimen and maintain vibrant, healthy curls.

High. See how quick your hair absorbed that water? Low porosity takes three business days to absorb 😂

Just do the water test, you take out a strand of hair, get a FULL glass of water and put it in,wait 5 minutes and check,if it’s at the top then it’s low porosity: this type of hair has tight cuticles and it’s very hard to absorb moister and loose it so use lighter products. If it’s at the bottom then you have High porosity: for this type of hair, the cuticle is tight and it’s very easy to absorb and loose water so use heavier products. If it’s in the middle then you have normal hair:this type of hair has a normal cuticle so you can use any products.
