You weren’t failing. You were going to seed.

People want a verdict.

Was it good or bad. Were they right or wrong. Are you for it or against it. We want the clean line so we know where to file it and who to be mad at. But most of the things that actually shaped us don’t fit on one side of a line.

That’s why God gave us seasons.

A flower blooms and everyone calls it beautiful. Then it wilts. It drops. It dies back into the dirt. And if you only saw that part, you’d call it a loss. You’d say something went wrong. But the dying is how the seed gets in the ground. The wilting is the bloom doing exactly what it was made to do. What looks like an ending is just the part of the cycle we don’t know how to praise yet.

God isn’t nearly as interested in the verdict as we are. He brings good out of broken things without ever calling the breaking holy. He uses a place to save you and still calls you out of it. The same season can be where you bloomed and where you had to fall, and both are true, and neither one cancels the other.

So maybe stop asking whether a thing was good or bad. Ask what season it was. Ask what it grew. Because the flower that dropped its petals didn’t fail.

It just went to seed.

6/20 Edited to

... Read moreIn my own experience, I’ve gone through seasons in life that felt like failures at first—moments when I thought things had gone awry, or a chapter had simply ended in loss. But reading this reminded me that these so-called "failures" were actually essential parts of growth. Much like a flower that blooms brightly and then drops its petals, what seems like an ending is often a necessary step toward a new beginning. The idea that "not every season looks like success but every season has a purpose" resonates deeply. Sometimes, during times of struggle or change, it’s natural to want to assign blame or seek a definitive judgment of right or wrong. However, reframing these experiences as seasons changes everything. It encourages patience and compassion for ourselves. The metaphor of the flower going to seed is powerful because it highlights how unseen processes—like the planting of seeds underground—prepare for future flourishing. Often, personal setbacks or transitions serve as the foundation for new opportunities or strengths that we don’t recognize immediately. I’ve found that embracing this cyclical view of growth fosters resilience. Instead of resisting change or feeling defeated, I try to look for what is being grown beneath the surface, even in difficult times. It’s helped me appreciate that life’s ‘‘breaking’’ moments are not meaningless but necessary for transformation. For those facing similar seasons, consider what this period is cultivating within you. Rather than asking if something was simply good or bad, ask what it is making possible. Trust that like the flower, you are not failing—you are preparing to flourish anew.
