HAPPY COOKING
Spam Musubi is a beloved Hawaiian snack that brings together simple yet flavorful ingredients. Making it at home is easy and rewarding. When preparing Spam slices, I find that cooking them until they are slightly crispy on the edges really enhances the texture and flavor. The sweet soy glaze made from soy sauce, mirin, and brown sugar creates a perfect balance of savory and sweet notes that coats the Spam beautifully. A helpful tip to get the classic musubi shape is to use an empty Spam can as a mold, cutting it in half as described. This ensures uniform rice blocks that hold nicely with the Spam on top. Wrapping with a thin slice of nori not only adds a pleasant seaweed aroma but also holds the snack together for easy handling. For the rice, using slightly sticky short-grain rice works best as it helps the musubi keep its shape without falling apart. You can also lightly season the rice with a pinch of salt or a splash of rice vinegar for an additional layer of flavor. Spam musubi makes a great portable snack or lunch option, especially when packed in a lunchbox. It’s also a crowd-pleaser for picnics and potlucks. You can customize it by adding a thin layer of egg or avocado inside for extra richness. Overall, this recipe is both approachable for beginners and flexible enough to adapt to your taste. Give it a try, and you’ll quickly see why Spam Musubi is a Hawaiian favorite!
