💭 3 THINGS TO TAKE NOTE IN POLY/UNI

Now that i’m in uni Y1, i often think back about my poly days and regret it so much all the time. Since poly and uni works on pretty much the same system, here are 3 things that you should do to boost your academics achievements 👩🏻‍🎓

1. BE CONSISTENT

Every exam, every assignments matter.

Due to peer influence, i missed multiple lectures and neglected my studies in y1. Despite trying to pull up my gpa in y2 & y3, i just couldn’t get to my ideal score - due to cumulative GPA. And really felt that my y1 gpa was such a burden.

‼️So if you do not want to regret like me, try to keep a balance and be disciplined throughout!

2. LEARN HOW TO SAY NO

As i mentioned in the previous point, i was very into the whole poly culture. Seeing how everyone had fun joining camps and team, of course i wanted to hop on the bandwagon.

BUT, all these required commitment + time. AND they can get quite pressuring at times - “ if you don’t attend the meetup/prep, you will miss out, drift etc” While it’s fun, learn how to say No when you really need the time to study. Let’s face it, they are usually convenient friends (read more here) and won’t be there for you after poly as compared to studies - which affects your future.

‼️Do your own evaluation and decide when it’s okay to go and when it’s not!

3. JOIN CASE COMPETITION/ HACKATHON

Other than internships, these are also really good for experience and portfolio building. If you think your gpa isn’t good enough, try work on other aspects like this. Else, you might not have anything to write that can make you stand out from the other peers. It also gives you a lot of other benefits -read about my experience here.

Be it you won something or not, there’s always takeaways you can gain from joining all these.

‼️ Actively keep a lookout for case competitions/ hackathons postings and join as many whenever you can :)

These are also the points that i’ll be bringing to uni so it’s never too late to start!

... Read moreMany aspiring university students wonder about the academic paths that lie ahead, especially those transitioning from polytechnic or junior college (JC) backgrounds. While this article focuses on thriving academically in poly and university life, it's also helpful to consider the broader landscape like the percentage of JC students that proceed to university—understanding this can shape your outlook on higher education options. From my experience, the journey isn't just about exams but also strategic decisions—balancing social commitments and academic priorities is key. For instance, seeing how many JC students choose university highlights the competitive environment you will be entering, an extra motivation to maintain consistency in your studies. Beyond GPA, participating in case competitions and hackathons stands out as a practical way to build a strong portfolio. This proactive approach helps students differentiate themselves, especially if they're concerned about their grades compared to peers who come from different educational streams. Finally, time management skills and the ability to say no when necessary aren't just survival techniques—they can shape your academic and personal growth during these formative years. Remember, your choices during poly or JC can impact your university experience and future career, so stay mindful and make deliberate, informed decisions.
