When Merit Is Not Enough

I’m excited to share my latest research.

When Merit Is Not Enough is a 24-month longitudinal autoethnographic study examining identity signaling, professional credibility, and evaluative exclusion across organizational and digital professional contexts.

I’ll add the manuscript in the next post below. I welcome thoughtful feedback and discussion.

7/4 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my own experiences in professional environments, I've noticed that merit alone often doesn't guarantee recognition or advancement. This study highlights a reality many encounter: professional credibility is frequently influenced by identity signals—subtle cues that affect how trust and competence are perceived. In workplaces I've been part of, consistent over-performance still required navigating layers of skepticism or exclusion shaped by identity, not just results. This aligns with the research findings that bias persists despite high-quality work and that the margin for error is much smaller for some individuals based on these invisible markers. Understanding that evaluative exclusion is systemic and often filtered through identity helps reframe how organizations should approach fairness and inclusivity. It’s a reminder that meritocratic ideals are not always upheld in practice, and therefore, additional efforts are needed to recognize the full humanity of professionals, beyond performance metrics. Engaging with this research encourages reflection on organizational cultures and personal biases. It can prompt policy changes or personal strategies to ensure that professional evaluations encompass context, identity, and lived experiences, not just outcomes. I believe this study importantly contributes to ongoing dialogues about equity, signaling the need for awareness and structural change to dismantle patterns of exclusion and better support diverse professional identities.
