✈️ Made It to DC

After 12 hours and 50 minutes with no sleep, a surprise high-altitude nosebleed, and multiple movie rewatches… we’ve officially made it to DC.

Customs: survived.

Snacks: reloaded.

Kids: still accounted for.

Now it’s time to tackle the final leg of the trip, and honestly, I’ve learned a few things as a mom traveling long-haul:

• Pack baby wipes (even if you don’t have babies — trust me)

• Pack extra headphones because one will disappear into the void or completely fall apart

• Pack excessive snacks like you’re feeding a small army

• Pack ALL the patience… more than you think you need

We’re tired, a little feral, but still moving forward. One more flight and we’re home. 💛

... Read moreTraveling long-haul with family, especially with kids, is a unique challenge that demands preparation beyond the usual checklist. The recent journey to DC highlights some universal truths any parent or caregiver can relate to. First, packing baby wipes is a game-changer. Despite not traveling with babies, wipes come in handy for spontaneous messes, fast clean-ups, and refreshing tired faces. Many seasoned travelers say it's one of those multi-purpose items that save the day in unexpected situations. Next, headphones are essential entertainment tools for keeping kids calm and comfortable during hours in the air. Bringing extras is wise because headphones tend to disappear into the black hole of lost baggage, under seats, or fall apart from frequent use. Ensuring each child has a reliable pair means fewer meltdowns and more peaceful travel. Snacks, often overlooked, have a critical role. Feeding a 'small army' is not an exaggeration when traveling with kids on long flights—hunger and boredom are the prime causes of irritability. Bringing a variety of favorite and healthy snacks keeps little ones engaged and prevents dependency on pricey airport or airplane offerings. Patience is perhaps the hardest element to pack because it is intangible yet crucial. Parents often underestimate how much mental and emotional endurance is required. From customs lines to unexpected events like high-altitude nosebleeds, a composed and flexible mindset helps families navigate hurdles with grace. Further, watching multiple movies is a common way to pass time on flights, but staying refreshed with sleep whenever possible and allowing for breaks to stretch can dramatically improve everyone’s mood upon arrival. In sum, this travel experience to DC underscores that preparation, a sense of humor, and realistic expectations are keys to surviving and even enjoying long-haul family trips. For those planning similar journeys, embracing these tips can transform travel stress into memorable family adventures.
