Remembering September 11, 2001
23 years ago I was just 11 years old, sitting in my 6th-grade classroom, when our teacher explained the unimaginable events unfolding in New York City. We watched in stunned silence as the scenes played out on TV. Later, I came home to find my mom sitting on the floor, with tears in her eyes as she watched the news. That day changed everything.
Coming from a family of firefighters, the impact of 9/11 was deeply personal. I am proud to have been the 4th generation and the first female firefighter in my family, following in the brave footsteps of those before me. My fiancé is also a firefighter, and together, we honor the legacy of courage and sacrifice.
On this tragic day, 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 8 paramedics lost their lives while trying to save others. Their bravery and selflessness are forever etched in our hearts. We remember and honor all the first responders who rushed into danger, embodying the true spirit of heroism.
We also pay tribute to the passengers of Flight 93, who displayed extraordinary courage in the face of terror. Their actions prevented further tragedy and saved countless lives. Their bravery is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
Additionally, we honor the passengers and crew of American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, and American Airlines Flight 77. Their lives were tragically cut short, but their memories live on. Their courage and the sacrifices they made will never be forgotten.
As we reflect on this day, let's take a moment to honor those who lost their lives and to express our gratitude to the first responders who continue to protect and serve. Their legacy lives on in the hearts of all who remember.
Stephen Siller was an FDNY firefighter who, on September 11, 2001, ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel with 60 pounds of gear to reach the Twin Towers, where he ultimately gave his life while saving others. His heroic actions inspired the creation of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors his memory and the sacrifices of all first responders.
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk retraces Stephen's final footsteps from the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. This annual event, held on the last Sunday of September, has grown significantly since its inception in 2002, now attracting nearly 40,000 participants. Don and I proudly participated in the run in 2022. The run not only commemorates the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 PAPD officers, and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on 9/11 but also supports the Foundation's mission to provide mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families, and build smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans.
