Why I Take It Black

Some people order coffee with caramel, foam, and sprinkles. I never have. I take it black — not as a performance, but because I learned to like it that way. The heat. The bitterness. The way it doesn’t apologize for itself. Growing up Gen X meant you didn’t get much sweetness handed to you. Praise wasn’t constant. Validation wasn’t ambient. You acquired taste the hard way. Black coffee felt like adulthood — earned, not decorated.

When I wrote “I take my coffee black — as bitter as my pride,” it wasn’t just about coffee. It was about a man in his forties who doesn’t get many sweet extras in life. You learn to survive on the bitter. Eventually, you convince yourself you thrive on it. Discipline becomes identity. Restraint becomes strength. You start calling scarcity maturity.

The song imagines a woman offering “cream, silver spoon, grace.” In truth, that was mostly fiction. No one had really offered me that kind of softness. Writing it as something I turned down was camouflage — a way of preserving dignity. It’s easier to be the man who refuses sweetness than the man who never received it. Masculine pride can be quiet like that. It edits the story to keep the edge intact.

But here’s what’s honest: I wasn’t rejecting grace. I was protecting myself from admitting I wanted it. There’s a difference. Bitterness is predictable. You know how to handle it. Grace reorganizes you. It changes your priorities. It softens edges you’ve built your identity around. That kind of change is harder to control.

I’ve acquired the taste of black coffee, and I genuinely love it. But every now and then, the sprinkles still look good. Not because I’ve grown weak — but because I never stopped being human.

... Read moreTaking coffee black is more than just a preference for some of us—it’s a metaphor for how we approach life’s challenges and hardships. Like the author describes, growing up with limited sweetness and constant demands to be strong and disciplined shapes not only our tastes but our identities. For many in Gen X and beyond, black coffee symbolizes the acceptance of life’s bitter realities without sugarcoating. In my own experience, I started drinking black coffee during college years, initially out of necessity but gradually developing a liking for its boldness and complexity. It became a symbol of waking up to responsibility and carving out strength through restraint—not unlike how we sometimes have to navigate difficult emotions or situations without easy comforts. Yet, there is an undeniable vulnerability in admitting that sometimes, the "sprinkles" of ease and softness appeal to us. The courage to acknowledge this craving—to desire grace and gentleness—feels like stepping outside a protective shell that we’ve built over the years. It also highlights an essential human truth: resilience doesn’t require rejecting kindness; instead, it involves balancing strength with acceptance. This perspective is meaningful especially in today’s fast-paced world where instant gratification is common, yet genuine growth often demands patience and confronting discomfort head-on. Black coffee serves as a reminder that some rich experiences come from embracing complexity rather than masking it with sweetness. So, next time you sip black coffee, consider its symbolic potency—not just as a beverage, but as a quiet affirmation of navigating life’s bitters with dignity, while still appreciating moments that soften the edges.
