Let Them Sell What They Can't Keep

Walk into almost any restaurant today and you'll see people sitting together while somewhere else entirely. Faces lit by tiny blue rectangles. Conversations interrupted before they begin. Entire evenings traded for endless scrolling.

The line, "I chose depth instead of sleep," isn't really about sleep.

It's about refusing to spend a life on autopilot.

It's about choosing long books over short dopamine hits. Difficult conversations over comfortable distractions. Building something slowly instead of chasing whatever everyone else is chasing this week.

The irony isn't that the man is alone.

The irony is that he's the only one actually present.

Maybe that's what depth costs.

🎵 Still Building — J.S. Clockwise

... Read moreIn today's world, the image of people gathered physically yet lost in their screens is all too common. From my own experiences in restaurants and social gatherings, I've noticed how the glow of smartphones draws attention away from the present moment, creating a sense of isolation even when surrounded by others. The phrase "I chose depth instead of sleep" resonates deeply, as it speaks not to sacrificing rest but to choosing substance over surface-level engagement. I’ve found that intentionally opting for depth often means rejecting the short bursts of dopamine from endless scrolling and superficial interactions. Instead, investing time in long, challenging books or engaging in difficult but meaningful conversations creates a lasting sense of fulfillment. This choice sometimes leads to solitude—not because one is disconnected, but because being truly present requires stepping away from the autopilot modes encouraged by modern distractions. The irony addressed here is profound: while many are distracted, the individual who chooses depth becomes the only one truly present. This presence is costly in some ways—it may mean feeling isolated or misunderstood—but it cultivates a richer inner life and stronger connections with others who seek the same authenticity. Through embracing this mindset, I’ve noticed improvements in my focus, creativity, and emotional resilience. Depth replaces the transient satisfaction of digital noise with enduring growth and self-awareness. While challenging, building something meaningful—whether in relationships, art, or self-development—slowly and deliberately feels infinitely more rewarding than chasing fleeting trends or comfort. Ultimately, "depth" is about conscious living—choosing quality over quantity in attention and experience. It asks us to reconsider how we spend our time and encourages a mindful presence that transforms ordinary moments into something profound and worthwhile.
