Wildfires can become powerful enough to create their own thunderstorms. 🔥⛈️

They’re called pyrocumulonimbus clouds.

A global inventory documented 761 confirmed pyroCb events from 2013–2023.

NASA’s INSPYRE campaign is studying them now.

... Read moreExperiencing the phenomenon of pyrocumulonimbus clouds firsthand is truly eye-opening. These rare thunderstorm-like clouds form solely due to intense heat and moisture released by wildfires, propelling smoke particles high into the atmosphere — sometimes as high as the stratosphere, 8 miles or more above Earth’s surface. I recall reading about NASA’s INSPYRE campaign where scientists flew through these towering smoke plumes during the Utah Widemouth 2 fire. This direct sampling helped uncover how wildfire smoke alters atmospheric chemistry and contributes to the formation of lightning, hail, and heavy rain within these pyroCbs. The fact that smoke from such fires can linger in the stratosphere for months or even years shows how wildfires have a far-reaching influence beyond just immediate environmental damage. Interestingly, although pyrocumulonimbus clouds are less common than regular wildfire occurrences, globally about 70 pyroCb events happen every year. Regions prone to frequent wildfires—like Canada, the United States, Russia, and Australia—regularly see these powerful atmospheric phenomena. Over the past decade, the number of documented pyroCb events has been steadily growing, potentially linked to increased wildfire activity fueled by climate change. What makes these clouds particularly significant is their ability to inject vast amounts of smoke and particles high into the atmosphere, sometimes rivaling volcanic eruptions in atmospheric impact. This smoke can influence Earth's energy budget and ozone layer, affecting climate patterns on a global scale. For those interested in earth science and atmospheric phenomena, following NASA’s continued research through satellites and aircraft missions provides valuable insights into how wildfires are intertwined with weather and climate systems. Understanding pyroCbs is not only scientifically fascinating but also crucial for improving wildfire prediction models and mitigating their environmental consequences.
