... Read moreThe history of the White House is not only about presidents and politics but also about the people who physically built it, many of whom were Black workers. While Paul Mooney humorously pointed out this important fact, it’s crucial to delve deeper into the real stories behind the construction. Enslaved African Americans and Black laborers played an indispensable role in erecting this symbol of American democracy during the late 18th century. Their craftsmanship and relentless labor contributed to every brick and beam within the White House’s structure. From my own research and visits to historical sites, I’ve learned how essential it is to acknowledge the full narrative of American history. Many historic buildings, including the White House, owe a debt to those whose names are not recorded in official documents but whose efforts ensured the buildings stood strong. It’s a humbling reminder that history is multi-layered and that the cultural contributions of Black Americans often remain in the shadows. Highlighting these stories not only educates but also honors the sacrifices and skills of Black workers throughout history. Today, recognizing this heritage allows us to better appreciate the complex fabric of American history and all those who helped build it, regardless of their status. Sharing and discussing this fact, as Paul Mooney did with wit and sharp insight, helps bring overdue awareness and respect to the true builders of the White House.
