Where To Find Affordable House Plants
Finding affordable house plants these days is difficult because many plant stores drastically overprice their plants, making it hard to fill your apartment with plants when some are priced at $200 or higher. I have had some good luck over the past couple of years finding various sizes of plants for an affordable price at Home Depot, Ikea, Amazon, and Trader Joe's.
Trader Joes Alocasia, Philodendron Xanadu, and Rubber Plant - all of these plants were under $20 dollars at Trader Joe’s and have been thriving since I got them. They are all very easy to take care of, and none of them need direct sun. I usually water them once a week during the summer or sometimes every other week.
Ikea Bird of Paradise - I recently went to Ikea for the first time a few months ago and was shocked by how many large plants they had for under $50. If you found this full-size Bird of Paradise at a plant store it would easily be $200+. I am so happy with how it looks in my space, and it is super easy to take care of and only needs 4 hours of sun daily.
Home Depot Fiddle Leaf Fig and Amazon Philodendron - again, both of these were very well priced, you would be paying $60 - $100 of these were in a plant store. My fiddle leaf has been a tricky plant to take care of, but the less you move it around and keep it in the same spot, the better. My Philodendron has tripled in size since I got it and is extremely easy to take care of, they don’t need much sunlight.

I've found some incredible Monstera plants and even rare Philodendron varieties this way, much cheaper than any nursery. It’s also a great way to meet other plant lovers and learn from their experiences. Another strategy I swear by is propagating. Many common indoor green plants like Pothos, Philodendrons, spider plants, and even some succulents are incredibly easy to propagate from cuttings. If you have a friend with a thriving plant, ask for a cutting! My first Split Leaf Philodendron started as a small cutting, and now it's a magnificent large leaf house plant that brings so much life to my living room. This method is essentially free and incredibly rewarding as you watch your new plant grow. Don't overlook the clearance or 'sad plant' sections at your local nurseries or big box stores. I've rescued many plants that just needed a little TLC, like a Fiddle Leaf Fig or a Dieffenbachia Tropic Snow that looked a bit droopy but quickly bounced back with proper watering and light. These plants are often heavily discounted, making them an excellent budget friendly plant option if you're willing to put in a little effort. Just be sure to check them thoroughly for pests before bringing them home. For those looking for long leaf house plants or just generally larger specimens, consider buying them when they are smaller. A tiny Bird of Paradise or Rubber Plant will cost significantly less than a mature one, and with patience, you can grow it into a magnificent focal point.
