If your child hits while smiling, pause. It’s joy overload, not disrespect. Comment YES.

... Read moreAs a parent, it can be puzzling and even alarming when your child hits you with a smile on their face. However, understanding the underlying emotional and neurological reasons can make a huge difference in how you respond. When children experience overwhelming positive emotions, their nervous systems often cannot regulate the intensity. Unlike adults, whose prefrontal cortex enables better emotional control, young children may lash out physically as their only release valve for this surge of joy and excitement. This behavior is not a sign of disrespect but rather a profound level of trust and safe attachment. Your child feels comfortable enough to let their intense feelings out, even if that means hitting. It’s their brain’s way of expressing gratitude and happiness in the moment, though it may be confusing to adults. Creating a safe environment to channel this energy can be very helpful. For example, encouraging your child to jump on a pillow, use deep breathing techniques together, or engage in physical play can help them release some of that overwhelming energy. Validating their emotions by acknowledging the joy behind their actions, rather than immediately correcting the behavior, fosters emotional intelligence and strengthens your bond. Reflecting on your own experiences as a child or recalling moments when you felt overwhelmed by positive emotions can deepen empathy. Remember, this phase is temporary, and by responding with understanding and patience, you help your child develop healthy emotional regulation skills. Ultimately, these moments reveal beautiful trust and closeness between you and your child—a sign of their comfort and love rather than any intentional misbehavior.

Yeah, you read that correctly 🫠🤪 My Toddler Was Hitting... But Not to Be Mean Let’s talk about something many of us don’t realize: Some toddlers don’t hit because they’re angry. They hit because they’re trying to play but don’t know how. That was my son. He spent the first 15 months

my preschooler hit me today….
Here’s how I handle hitting! First, you always want to validate their feelings. this will cause the meltdown to not escalate, and they will feel understood and seen. Instead of jumping into “do not hit me”, let them know you understand. Next, hold the boundary. This can look like… “I can’t

Hot take: some parenting choices just give me the ick. 🙈 We’ve all seen it the chest clip sitting at the belly button instead of the chest and one strap not even on. I get that people need to learn, but when it’s so obviously wrong, you’d think parents would look it up and make sure it’s done corr
