How I Budget for Medical Bills & Baby Expenses 💸

Before baby 2 , I needed a money plan that actually worked for real life — not perfection.

Sinking funds have been a game changer for preparing for medical bills and baby expenses without stress or credit cards.

Even with insurance, pregnancy and postpartum costs add up fast. By setting aside small amounts each paycheck, I’m creating peace, flexibility, and margin for this season of life.

This isn’t about having extra money — it’s about being prepared so future me isn’t overwhelmed when the bills come in or baby needs something unexpectedly.

If you’re pregnant, planning a baby, or resetting your finances in your 30s, sinking funds might be the simplest habit to start 🤍

... Read moreIt's easy to focus on the big medical bills and initial baby gear, but as a parent, I quickly realized that the expenses just keep coming – especially when it comes to childcare. If you're like me, you might be wondering how to tackle the significant cost of daycare, not just the monthly fees, but all those little things they ask you to bring. This is where the magic of sinking funds truly shines for long-term planning, helping you stay ahead of the curve. Think about it: beyond the recurring tuition, daycares often have registration fees, annual supply lists, and unexpected needs like extra clothing or specific brands of wipes. And yes, sometimes even specialized items like diaper changing gloves for hygiene, depending on the facility's policies! These aren't emergency expenses; they're known, predictable costs that can sneak up on your budget if you don't plan for them. That's why I started a dedicated 'Daycare Sinking Fund'. Just like my 'Baby Expenses Fund' for diapers and wipes at home, this separate pool of money helps me prepare. I started by researching local daycare costs, including average monthly tuition and any one-time fees. Then, I looked into what supplies are typically required. Many daycares provide a list: extra diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, sunscreen, sometimes specific formula or baby food. Some might even ask for a box of gloves for staff to use, or personal care items. Instead of scrambling when these requests come in, I contribute a small, consistent amount to this fund each paycheck. The beauty of this system is that it removes the stress. Even putting aside $25-$50 per paycheck, as I do for other funds, accumulates surprisingly fast. When the annual registration fee is due, or it's time to restock a huge box of diapers and wipes for daycare, the money is already there. I don't have to dip into my regular budget or, worse, use a credit card. It’s all about creating that financial peace and flexibility, knowing that these costs are covered. For where to keep these funds, I echo the advice from my own experience: a high-yield savings account or separate savings 'buckets' are ideal. This keeps the money accessible but out of sight from my daily checking, preventing accidental spending. It also allows the money to earn a little interest, which is always a bonus! My biggest piece of advice? Don't wait until you're already enrolled to start planning. Even if you're just considering daycare, begin estimating potential costs and start a small 'Daycare Prep' sinking fund. It’s a proactive step that transforms overwhelming expenses into manageable contributions, ensuring your little one has everything they need without adding financial strain to your family. It truly makes a difference in feeling prepared and confident as a parent.
