Size matters…

I’ve always found it amusing how chip bags seem so big, yet they’re mostly filled with air. It really hits home when you open one expecting a full bag and find it only half-filled. This is actually due to a process called 'slack fill,' which manufacturers use to protect delicate chips from breaking during shipping. It’s a clever packaging tactic but can make us feel like we're paying for more than just the snacks. From my experience, this phenomenon extends beyond chips. Many snack products use extra air to cushion the contents, which can be surprising if you’re not expecting it. Understanding this has changed the way I shop—I now look for the net weight on the package rather than just relying on the size of the bag. Interestingly, this also fuels a lot of humorous observations online, especially the kind of dad jokes that point out how ‘air’ is the true product we’re buying. While it can be a bit frustrating as a consumer, it’s also a reminder to read labels closely and not judge a snack just by its package size. Ultimately, it’s all about balancing protection and value, and maybe appreciating a good laugh along the way.
