Do I Really Need Sunscreen Indoors?

I’ve heard so many different opinions on this. Some people say sunscreen is non negotiable every day, while others say it’s unnecessary if you’re mostly indoors.

What’s your take? Do you wear SPF even when you don’t leave the house?

#lemon8challenge #skincareinsider #askderm #routinehelp

6/1 Edited to

... Read moreIn my experience, deciding whether to wear sunscreen indoors depends largely on your daily routine and the kind of light exposure you get. While many assume that staying indoors completely shields them from UV damage, certain types of UV rays, especially UVA rays, can penetrate windows and cause skin harm over time. This is why experts often recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily — even when inside. I recently tried the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen with SPF 70, which is known for its lightweight and non-greasy feel. It offers antioxidant benefits through Vitamin E and uses Helioplex technology for stable, long-lasting protection. For me, this product made it easy to incorporate sun protection seamlessly into my indoor skincare routine without feeling heavy or sticky. If you work near windows or spend considerable time in naturally lit rooms, applying sunscreen is a smart move to prevent premature aging and reduce the risk of skin cancer. However, if your indoor time is mostly away from direct light sources, some dermatologists suggest that a lower SPF moisturizer might suffice. Ultimately, it's about understanding your environment and tailoring skincare accordingly. In addition to sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and considering window films that block UV rays can further enhance your skin's defense indoors. So, whether you choose to wear SPF every day or only on days with significant sun exposure, staying informed and consistent with sun protection practices will keep your skin healthier over time.

Hi there, dermatologist here!! So my answer is: it depends on your exposure. If you’re indoors all day with minimal sunlight coming through windows, sunscreen is generally less critical than if you’re spending time outside. However, UVA rays can penetrate glass, so if you sit near windows for extended periods, drive frequently, or have concerns such as melasma or hyperpigmentation, daily sunscreen is still a good idea. For most people, I recommend making broad-spectrum SPF 30+ part of their morning routine. Not only is it easier to stay consistent, but you never know when you’ll step outside for errands, a walk, or a quick drive. Bottom line: if you’re truly indoors all day, sunscreen may be less important, but daily SPF is a simple habit that helps protect against cumulative sun damage over time. Hope this helps! Not medical advice 😉✨🧡
