Glycolic Acid Is That Girl!

Glycolic acid is one of those body-care products that may not look exciting, but I absolutely love what it can do for the look and feel of my skin. It’s a chemical exfoliant that helps remove dead skin cells and can leave your skin looking smoother, brighter, and more even.

I like using it on areas that tend to get rough, dull, or darker-looking, like my underarms, elbows, knees, bikini line/external intimate area, and the backs of my arms and legs. It can also be helpful for that rough, bumpy looking texture you sometimes get on the body.

But be careful with it! I wouldn’t use it on broken, freshly shaved, irritated, or sensitive skin, and I definitely wouldn’t put glycolic acid inside the vagina or on the vulva/labia. The bikini line means the external skin around the area, not your actual intimate tissues.

And because exfoliating can make your skin more sensitive, I always think body moisturizer is a must and sunscreen is especially important on exposed areas.

... Read moreIn my skincare journey, glycolic acid has truly transformed how I care for my body, not just my face. I remember struggling with rough patches on my elbows and knees that no moisturizer could fully smooth out. After incorporating a 7% glycolic acid toner into my routine—similar to The Ordinary’s formulation—I noticed a visible improvement in texture and brightness within weeks. What’s great about glycolic acid is how it gently dissolves the bonds holding dead skin cells together, which helps reveal fresh, glowing skin beneath. I focus on applying it to commonly rough or dull areas like my underarms, backs of legs, and even my bikini line’s external skin (never inside sensitive areas). One key lesson I learned is to avoid using it on freshly shaved or irritated skin to prevent discomfort. Moisturizing immediately after exfoliating with glycolic acid is essential to keep the skin barrier healthy and hydrated. Also, since glycolic acid can increase sun sensitivity, applying sunscreen daily on exposed areas became a non-negotiable step in my routine. This combination helps maintain that smooth, radiant look while protecting against UV damage. If you’re new to glycolic acid, start slowly—perhaps two or three times a week—and observe how your skin reacts. Consistency paired with caution has made this chemical exfoliant a staple in my body care favorites. It’s amazing to see how such a simple ingredient can refresh dull, rough patches and elevate overall skin luminosity.
